Many young American women in gamer and tech circles grew up flipping through American Girl catalogs, reading about and playing with dolls that came with their own backstories. The newest doll to join the ranks is a gamer/programmer named Courtney Moore, who grew up around 1986, the same year that American Girl was founded.

In conjunction with Girls Who Code, a nonprofit dedicated to breaking down stereotypes about careers for women in tech fields such as programming, American Girl aims to help girls everywhere realize that their career options should not be limited by their gender. While it is wonderful to have a new geeky role-model on the line, the bit that has everyone talking is one of her accessories: a Pac-Man arcade cabinet, much like the one Hasbro released just this summer for the game's 40th anniversary.

The Pac-Man arcade cabinet stands nearly as tall as Courtney does, about 16 inches, and apparently is fully functional, complete with ghosts Pinky, Inky, Blinky, and Clyde. The game requires no quarters, instead relying on a built-in rechargeable battery and standard USB cable. The joystick and buttons all work, though it has yet to be seen whether the arcade cabinet will remember high scores. The arcade cabinet is available for $150 as its own stand-alone accessory and is not currently included with any bundles.

This is not the first time American Girl dolls have expressed an interest in gaming. In 2018 the American Girl Xbox Gaming Set became available, though it was not tied to any particular doll. This particular arcade cabinet is Courtney's without a doubt, along with her bunk bed and Pac-Man lunch box.

Some fans have expressed disappointment that Courtney is yet another white, blond doll with blue eyes, even if she does embrace her techie side. After American Girl declared its commitment to increasing diversity and minority representation in its products, many were expecting the next release to be a doll of color.

Hopefully, Courtney will show up in the live-action American Girl movie, which is still in production.

The Courtney Moore collection by American Girl is available for purchase on the website now, and will be in retail stores starting September 25th. Courtney's Pac-Man Arcade Game is available for pre-order on the website and will start shipping on October 2nd.
