With each successive generation of game consoles, developers are tasked with further pushing the envelope of what is possible with the current technology. While gameplay and A.I. see many changes with each of these hardware jumps, it is the update in graphical quality that sees the most noticeable change and gets the most attention. Even though many gamers are unable to fathom what that next big jump in technology will entail, AMD have weighed in on what the next generation of Microsoft consoles may hold.
Best known for their high-end PC GPUs, AMD was also the company behind the graphics hardware that powered the Xbox 360. With so much recent talk regarding the next generation of game consoles, AMD has stated that the graphics presented by the Xbox 720 will be on par with those of the James Cameron movie Avatar.
Despite this statement, AMD would not confirm whether or not they have any involvement with the upcoming console. If their past work with Microsoft and this recent statement are any indication though, it would not be at all surprising to see them working alongside the console juggernaut for the Xbox 360’s successor.
While it’s only a matter of time before the graphical quality of video games reaches that of the high-end CGI exhibited in Hollywood blockbusters like Avatar, it’s difficult to know whether or not AMD’s statement is more exaggeration than truth. Gamers need only look at current PC games to see that even with superior technology backing their machines, graphics of this caliber are still nowhere to be seen. While there are definitely strong titles like Crysis 2 and The Witcher 2, AMD’s claims still sound rather grandiose.
This is not to say that they will not be capable of graphics of this quality in the future, but it seems unlikely that consoles will see a jump in graphics that greatly surpasses those of the PC anytime soon. Only time will tell though.
Alongside this lofty claim, AMD also weighed in on the future of A.I. and physics for the next-generation Microsoft console. In an open-world game such as Grand Theft Auto, the superior technology of this future hardware would allow developers to give each and every pedestrian a unique personality and thought process so that no two NPCs react to situations in the same way.
Not only would this create a completely new level of immersion for gamers, but it would also ensure that the world that their character inhabits truly feels like a living, breathing place. With NPCs possessing the ability to think for themselves, gamers may finally be able to enter into a fabricated world which is just as unpredictable as the real world.
Like the graphics claim though, there’s really no way to know whether they are just exaggerations or not at the moment. If the rumor that the Xbox 720 could run a new Windows operating system is true, then this statement could hold some truth as the new console could bridge the gap between consoles and PCs. Regardless, gamers will just have to wait until Microsoft officially reveals their next console.
Do you think it is possible that the Xbox 720 will be capable of such high-quality graphics? With this new A.I. technology, what are you most excited to see?
