The upcoming AMD graphics card may not be as exciting as it was originally made out to be, according to a new leak. Big Navi looks like it simply won't be stepping up the quality that much, especially when compared to the high expectations for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Ti.

The leak from Coroteks reportedly comes from "sources in Asia" and claims that Big Navi will be more comparable to the Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti, which is rumored to be 20% slower than the upcoming RTX 3080. That would put AMD a whole generation behind Nvidia, although AMD is reported to have told partners that Big Navi will outperform the RTX 2080 Ti by 15%. If those numbers line up and AMD is correct in its estimate, Big Navi is still behind the RTX 3080 Ti.

And that's with a best-case scenario, using titles "optimized for AMD graphics cards." This is bad news for a graphics card that's been touted as the "Nvidia killer" and is reportedly being launched by AMD as a "direct competitor" to the RTX 3080. Big Navi reveal is set for early September, with launch a month after that. The pricing for Big Navi is reportedly going to be based off how Nvidia prices the RTX 3080, with AMD aiming to undercut Nvidia. Leaks about Nvidia, on the other hand, tell a much better story, with the RTX 3090 projected to have a huge performance upgrade.

These leaks point to Big Navi competing with the standard Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 as opposed to the higher-powered RTX 3080 Ti, which may come as a shock to some people who were expecting AMD to step up its game. Other leaks have pinpointed Big Navi as performing up to 50% faster than the RTX 2080 Ti, which is a lot higher than what AMD reportedly shared with its partners. This is disappointing after earlier this year, when AMD hyped up Big Navi for its use in the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

While imperfect, Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti sets a high standard in video game graphics cards, and if Big Navi can top that standard, it's on a good track. The graphics might not be as good as expected, but they'll still be excellent quality. Still, AMD has been pushing the edge of innovation in graphics cards for a while now, and it makes sense for people to expect its products to show significant improvement.

Coroteks also hints at the possibility of two Big Navi models being launched, and AMD is reportedly working on a mid-range model for release in 2021 to rival Nvidia's RTX 2060. Although the graphics for Big Navi might not be what some people were hoping for, the reported price undercut may give AMD the edge it needs to dominate Nvidia in the upcoming generation showdown.
