AMC is developing a new show that will star comedian Jim Gaffigan as controversial former Toronto mayor, Rob Ford. The show is described as a dark comedy series and intends to chart Ford's rise to political power beginning in 2010 before an eventual fall after he was filmed smoking an illegal substance while in the middle of his re-election campaign.

Ford passed away back in 2016 at the age of 46, and many may be surprised by this show as a result.. It's worth noting that AMC is developing the concept into a pilot, which means that there's no guarantee that the show will be turned into a full series.

Gaffigan confirmed his casting as Ford on his Twitter where he wrote "Stop the gravy train!!!" alongside an emoji of the Canadian flag and a link to his casting announcement. The comedian has appeared in several comedy specials including Mr. UniverseBeyond the PaleKing Baby, ObsessedCinco and Noble Ape. His most recent special, Quality Time, is currently available to stream on Amazon.

He has also appeared in more dramatic roles including American Dreamer, Above the Shadows and Light from Light, suggesting that if the role demands a more serious edge, Gaffigan will be able to deliver alongside his obvious comedy chops. As well as his comedy and acting creditionals, Gaffigan is also a writer, having released a memoir entitled Dad Is Fat and Food: A Love Story.
