The $50-million defamation trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard has pulled several high-profile names into the former couple's legal drama, including Aquaman star Jason Momoa. In light of recent events, some fans are questioning what the current state of Momoa and Heard's relationship is; specifically if the two share an off-screen friendship or if their relationship is strictly professional.

Rumors of a falling out between the Aquaman co-stars began to circulate when Momoa started following Depp on Instagram. Some people have interpreted the gesture as an indication that Momoa sides with the veteran actor, while others believe he only did it on the advice of his PR team to imply his neutrality. At this point, Momoa and Heard still follow each other on Instagram, but it is unclear whether they still maintain a line of communication with each other.

Many Aquaman fans believe that Momoa's views and opinions on the defamation case are crucial, at least from a public relations perspective. Heard is his co-star, after all, and she is directly affiliated with the franchise that he has championed from the beginning. So, her libel case could have a detrimental effect on his next highly-anticipated project, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. With that in mind, a statement from Momoa could help quell some of the frustrations that are currently overwhelming the Aquaman fandom.

Yet, Momoa has remained silent throughout the entire court proceedings so far, refraining from giving any public statement to indicate where he stands on the issue. One frustrated follower of his even called him a coward for not speaking out on Heard's situation, arguing that his voice would have a huge impact if he would just use it. "Even [Momoa] refusing to play Aquaman would be immensely powerful, and I'm sure he has the financials to do so," reads the fan's tweet.

The last time fans got a glimpse of Heard and Momoa's relationship was in 2018, when Heard made an appearance on Good Morning America. During the interview, she poked fun at Momoa, saying he is "allergic to being ignored" and that he would often rip pages out of the book she was reading so that she would pay attention to him.

It would seem from her statement that the two share a close friendship with one another, but it would later be revealed that Warner Bros. almost dropped Heard entirely from the Aquaman sequel due to "chemistry concerns." At this point, viewers are curious to see what new developments will come out of the trial, as texts between Momoa and Heard are expected to be revealed sometime during the proceedings.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to arrive in theaters on May 17, 2023.
