As more and more streaming services come out like Netflix, Hulu, Paramount Plus, Disney Plus, and so on, it becomes more confusing what to keep, what to watch where, and so on. Luckily, though, gaming services tend to be a little more limited. Sure, for someone with a Playstation, Xbox, Switch, and PC, it’s overwhelming, but PlayStation has PS Now and PS Plus, Xbox Has Xbox Live Gold and Game Pass, Switch has Nintendo Switch Online, and PC users have a wider selection and less typical service models.

Epic Games Store may be one of the most popular and constant methods of scoring free PC games, but Amazon Prime Gaming has been building a lot of momentum lately. For Amazon Prime Gaming, its biggest should-be draws are how many already likely have Amazon Prime (and gaming is a perk of that), while once the game is downloaded, it belongs to the subscriber forever. But, perhaps more so than anything, November and December’s line-up are both indicative of an upward trend for the service.

Why Amazon Prime Gaming is the Underdog (And Why You Should Bet on It)

Across all services that offer free games, there are typical patterns subscribers can spot. For Games with Gold, for example, it’s clear Xbox’s emphasis is more on Game Pass than it, often resulting in four lackluster games with the occasional gem. This is why many have called for Xbox to end Games with Gold and just put even more resources into Game Pass. With Epic Games Store, while it occasionally has a big game, it usually brings a lot of spotlight to smaller, sometimes more Indie games than other services.

PS Plus is the hardest to predict, just because it changes its pattern every few months. For a while, it was one big AAA game and one smaller game, then it was a wide assort of high quality and varied games, new PS5 games got mixed into that, and finally right now PS Plus seems to be in a transition period.

This puts Amazon in an interesting spot. Not only does it currently and typically offer more than any of the above combined, but the past few months have generally been as good, if not better, than all of these services.

Amazon Prime Gaming’s Free Games for December Are Top Notch

Need For Speed Hot Pursuit Heat Remastered

November’s headlining games, for example, Control: Ultimate Edition, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Rise of the Tomb Raider, while December’s is Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, Journey to the Savage Planet, and Football Manager 2021. Joining it next month are Morkredd, Spellcaster University, YouTube’s Life, Stubbs the Zombie in Rebel Without a Pulse, and Tales of Monkey Island Complete Pack. Plus, Amazon Prime Gaming will be giving away in-game content for Battlefield 2042, Apex Legends, Fall Guys, Genshin Impact, New World, and Roblox.

All in all, it has more interesting, smaller-scale games than Epic Games Store, while offering big varied titles that capture the best parts of PS Plus. And, on top of that, it’s the only service that really pushes in-game content as its own bonus. Amazon Prime Gaming manages to stand out among giants like PlayStation and Xbox, and while that’s expected of a company Amazon’s size, it’s nice and refreshing to see. Many players aren’t even familiar with or claiming the bonuses or games they’re all entitled to, and that will hopefully change as Prime Gaming maintains this upward momentum.

Amazon Prime Gaming subscribers get a handful of free games every month.
