Over the past couple of years, social media app TikTok has become a massive phenomenon. The app is known for its trends, where users create short lip-syncing videos and skits using pre-existing sounds. One of the latest TikTok trends uses a sound from the 90s PlayStation game PaRappa the Rapper, specifically the song that's sung by PaRappa and his driver's education teacher early in the game.

For the uninitiated, PaRappa the Rapper is a rhythm game about a rapping dog. It won multiple awards from the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences, and was notable for its catchy original songs. Among these tunes is Instructor Mooselini's Rap, which is all about PaRappa learning how to drive. The song lyrics go: "Alright, we're here, just sitting in the car. I want you to show me if you can get far."

From there, PaRappa asks, "Step on the gas?" And then depending on the content of the TikTok, the sound will reiterate and emphasize "Step on the gas!" or alternatively, it will say "Step on the brakes!" The sound has been used for all kinds of TikTok videos, though it seems to be mainly used for TikTok videos that are sexually suggestive.

This is far from the first time TikTok has been influenced by a video game. Earlier this year, millions of TikTok users changed their profile picture to LEGO Star Wars characters, a fad that was even picked up by some of the top stars on the app.

Other examples of video games being featured in TikTok include the Fortnite TikTok challenge where Epic Games said it would add the winner's dance to its battle royale game. The TikTok studio itself has also expressed an interest in branching out to make mobile video games. And plus, there are thousands of TikTok accounts dedicated solely to video games, showing off tips and tricks in Call of Duty or just discussing the biggest gaming news of the day.

TikTok's more flexible format could very well keep it from becoming the next Vine and eventually losing its popularity. For now, it remains one of the top social media/video streaming apps in the world, and there's no sign that its momentum will be slowing down any time soon.

PaRappa the Rapper is out now for PS1, PSP, and PS4.
