Prior to last night’s episode of Dynamite, All Elite Wrestling announced the winners of their second fan-voted awards. For weeks, fans had the opportunity to cast their votes in 12 categories for whom they felt were the most deserving. By the end of the night, several up-and-coming stars walked away with an award, as did several champions.
The previous AEW Awards were hosted by Tony Schiavone and Dr. Britt Baker DMD. This year, both Schiavone and Baker made another appearance as the leaders of the ceremony but were also joined by TNT Champion Scorpio Sky and Ethan Page. Throughout the ceremony, there were several surprise appearances as the winners took a moment to speak with the fans who voted for them.
Schiavone kicked off the 2022 AEW Awards by introducing the winners for the Biggest Surprise Moment. The winners of the award were less surprising, as Adam Cole and Bryan Danielson's debuts at the 2021 All Out pay-per-view became one of the most shocking moments of the year. The ceremony concluded with the winner for the prestigious Wrestler of the Year Award, which was earned by Kenny Omega. Omega has been out of an AEW ring following the Full Gear pay-per-view in November to heal from a number of injuries. During his acceptance speech, Omega regarded that 2021 was one of the hardest years of his career, but that winning the fan-voted Wrestler of the Year Award would serve as additional motivation for him to return to AEW better than ever.
As the ceremony continued, Schiavone and Baker would continue to banter with one another. Page and Sky would join in on the fun as they announced the AEW Award nominees and winners of most of the categories. The four were an entertaining mix to host the awards, and the surprise appearances of fan favorites, HOOK and Danhausen, certainly didn't hurt the fun. Rose is the only competitor to win the same AEW Award twice, and it's likely that she will continue her win-streak next year. This year's ceremony looked back on the massive year AEW had in 2021, and they have no signs of letting up. With the momentum AEW has been rolling with since the start of 2022, next year's award ceremony that will look back on this year will force fans to make plenty of difficult choices.
The AEW Awards are now streaming on YouTube.
