Coming out of E3 2014, there were many games on journalists’ minds, from 2K Games’ 4v1 “cooperpetative” shooter Evolve to the stunning 45-minute demo of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. So much so that it was hard to single out just one experience as the must-play of the show.
That being said, there were a few demos that were consistently thrown around as must-sees, especially the Alien: Isolation demo on Oculus Rift. We didn’t get to try the demo for ourselves (although we did get to play Isolation), but those who did play it came back both terrified and excited.
Unfortunately, as it turns out, what developer Creative Assembly had prepared for Alien: Isolation was nothing more than a prototype. The developer confirmed the news on Twitter saying there are no current plans to support the VR headset with their forthcoming game.
Obviously, given that Alien: Isolation is slated to release this October and the Oculus Rift won’t hit until at least next year, we should have put two and two together but we didn’t. In a way, the excitement surrounding the demo, especially how it was able to perfectly capture the tense atmosphere of the first film, clouded our critical thinking.
Still, the positive reception that accompanied the demo should be enough for Creative Assembly to keep Oculus in the back of their minds if Isolation gets a sequel. In fact, we would bet that if Isolation is a success and Rift is on the market, that Isolation 2 will support the VR headset.
First things first, though, Alien: Isolation has to deliver on fans’ hopes, which, if our E3 2014 preview of the game is any indication, it very will could. Creative Assembly has been actively trying to reassure fans that this is the game they wanted Colonial Marines to be, and in some respects it seems like they are on the right track. However, if the game truly is as terrifying as the devs want it to be, maybe it’s a good thing the game won’t support Oculus.
Are you disappointed to learn that Alien: Isolation likely won’t come to Oculus Rift? What would be the game or series that would convince you to buy the VR headset?
Alien: Isolation releases October 7, 2014 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
