Despite it being nearly 10 years since its release, diehard fans of action-adventure title Alan Wake are still hungry for a sequel or follow-up of some kind. Sadly, developer Remedy has repeatedly insisted that it's not working on anything Alan Wake related, but a recent interview reveals that it did attempt to make a sequel a couple of years ago.

Remedy's director of communications, Thomas Puha, said "We were working on Alan Wake 2 years ago and it just didn’t pan out, so there’s nothing – we’re just booked solid for the next couple of years, really. We do own the Alan Wake IP, but it’s never quite as simple as that, but yeah, we do own it.”

He would further explain that Remedy simply doesn't have the time, money, or resources to work on an Alan Wake sequel, with their main focus at the moment being the upcoming shooter Control, where players have access to telekinetic powers and a supernatural firearm that can take different forms. Another team at the studio is helping make an HD remake of online shooter Crossfire and its sequel - specifically the single-player portions of them. And on top of that, there's a third team called Vanguard that are already developing the first phases of Remedy's next big project.

"A lot of the things that Remedy has done in the last five years is really about putting the company into a position where we have more control,” Puha said. “I mean, the name [of the game] really comes almost from that, and it’s giving us, as a company, the opportunity to decide what happens when the game is out. So, of course, we’re always trying to build a franchise.

“We spent all that time creating the world and everything, and when you only do it for one game, it’s just a lot of work. We’ve got nothing against sequels, so definitely Control is something that we want to be working on in the future. But of course, the first game has to be as good as it can to even build that platform that we can make more, so that’s what we’re focused on.”

With Remedy having become a publicly listed company back in 2017 and since they own the IP, this isn't a situation where a third-party is forcing the studio not to work on it. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like Remedy has any plans on returning to the IP any time soon.

“Does that mean we always make the right decision? Of course not,” said Puha. “But at least we are the ones making it, and we’re really trying to make sure that we get to make more Control. That’s the hope. Of course, that was the hope with Alan Wake, and these things didn’t really work out, but hopefully we’ve learned from that.”

There was talk last year of Alan Wake being adapted into a TV show, which could certainly satisfy the fanbase, but there has been no word on it since September.

Alan Wake is available right now on PC and Xbox 360.
