When All Elite Wrestling, or AEW, was first formed, it was clear from the get-go that a video game based on the brand would be produced. In fact, it's been said that AEW has already invested a significant amount of money to create the AEW video game, which is currently in development at Yuke's, the studio that worked on WWE video games since 2000's WWF SmackDown! up to WWE 2K19.
Details on the AEW video game remain hard to come by. It's known that the WWF No Mercy director is involved in the game's production, and short gameplay clips have confirmed Chris Jericho, Darby Allin, Hikaru Shida, Jungle Boy, and Kenny Omega for the roster. Now a new report from Fightful Select has potentially revealed some new details about what fans can expect from the AEW video game.
According to the report, the AEW video game will have a story mode that's being worked on by AEW wrestlers as well as game developers that previously worked on the SmackDown vs. Raw story modes. As far as when fans will get to see more of the game in action, apparently they will have to wait for the AEW video game to secure a publisher. Right now it's being developed by Yuke's, but no publisher has been announced at the time of this writing.
Due to AEW's connections with Warner Media through its TBS and TNT television deals, one would think an obvious choice for a game publisher would be Warner Bros. Interactive. However, it's entirely possible that a different publisher will pick up the rights to the AEW video game instead. Right now 2K Sports is basically unopposed in the wrestling video game world, so maybe one of its rivals like EA Sports will step up to publish the AEW game. Alternatively, perhaps THQ Nordic will pick up publishing duties, as the original THQ published many Yuke's-developed WWE video games over the years.
Once the AEW video game gets a publisher, new information on it should come out at a faster rate. The AEW video game is currently without a release date, but maybe that and other information on the game will come to light once a publisher is finally secured.
In the meantime, it's also been confirmed that AEW star Thunder Rosa will be a part of the AEW video game roster. Thunder Rosa has consistently been one of the most-featured wrestlers in AEW's women's division, and just recently defeated Dr. Britt Baker to win the AEW Women's World Championship in a Steel Cage Match.
The AEW video game is in development.
