"What time is it? Adventure Time!" The delightfully surreal adventures of Finn the Human and Jake the Dog have been confined to the television screen for long enough. Where are the games?

As if in answer to that very question, Adventure Time mastermind Pendelton Ward took to twitter to announce that a DS game is on the way, from Wayforward Technologies (Mighty Switch Force, Shante: Risky's Revenge, BloodRayne: Betrayal). This is the part where you say, "mathmatical!"

For the uninitiated, Adventure Time follows the exploits of hat-wearing, sword-weilding Finn -- possibly the only human in the Land of Ooo -- and his talking, shape-changing dog/brother, who happens to share a voice with Gears of War's Marcus Fenix. The show features an ever expanding cast of side characters (Marceline the Vampire Queen, Ice King, Princess Bubblegum, Lady Rainicorn, Lumpy Space Princess, Susan Strong, Starchy, Peppermint Butler... I could continue), and as strange as it sounds initially, things only get stranger as the series only goes on -- in a very, very good way.

Anyhow, Ward (@buenothebear) spilled the proverbial beans on the Adventure Time DS game in a series of tweets, with which he included some swell drawings. Check them all out below.

"Here we go, a sweet sweet DS game, being made at WayForward Technologies, will come out later this year -->"

"To be clear y'all, it's a DS game, it's gonna be hot to trot like a horse.. a DS horse."

"The Adventure Time DS game will release later this year sometime.. I'm gonna be working on it with @wayforwardtech"

It should come as no surprise that Ward will be personally involved with the DS game. Whole episodes of Adventure Time have been dedicated to games (Guardians of Sunshine, Dad's Dungeon), and it would be tough to miss the Dungeons and Dragons influence, right down to the show's logo.

Adventure Time DS Game

For now, there is no word on exactly what kind of game Adventure Time will be. Though I'll admit to longing for an elaborate action-RPG (along the lines of what Obsidian Entertainment is doing with South Park The Game), the involvement of Wayforward Technologies does suggest that we may be in for a sidescroller -- not a bad thing, considering the developer's excellent track record with the genre.

That said, Adventure Time delights in subverting expectations. Could Ward's doodles be a sly indication that drawing (remember, this is a DS game) will be an important mechanic? What do you think?

Ranters, what's your excitement level for the Adventure Time game? What sort of game do you hope it turns out to be? Let us know in the comments below.

Adventure Time will release later this year, exclusively for the Nintendo DS. Sorry, Beemo.
