Appearances can always be deceiving, and this is especially true in video games. Certain characters can look positively charming yet have a dark side to them that disturbs players to their very core. Meanwhile, other characters seem destined to be evil people...only to show a wholesome side that no one would have guessed after looking at their grotesque figure.

This list will take a look at some of the most seemingly adorable characters in video gaming who are, despite what looks suggest, the very definition of evil itself. These reveals are either genuinely surprising or serve as an odd juxtaposition from the get-go, which can almost be unintentional. Regardless, the following video game characters did a great job of hiding their true natures with a cute facade.

8 Flowey — Undertale

Undertale Flowey Ending

Undertale has a bunch of cute characters that fans will remember long after they're finished with this magical experience. However, not all of them are good, and in fact, some are downright heinous.

Flowey is the perfect mention here, both because he's adorable and, at the beginning, so unassuming. The idea of a normal cute flower being a major antagonist in the game is pretty neat, and the final boss against him in the Neutral Route is pretty engaging indeed.

7 Wheatley — Portal 2

Wheatley from Portal 2

Wheatley comes off as a rather cute and endearing helper for Chell in Portal 2. But after GLaDOS is unseated from her throne, Wheatley takes over the main controls... only to love the surge of power he experiences, causing him to turn hostile.

Unlike GLaDOS, Wheatley's motivations for staying in power are rather selfish. It takes a stern beatdown and a sendoff into space for this character to finally be humbled.

6 Tom Nook – Animal Crossing

Nook at desk.

Tom Nook seems like a rather easygoing anthropomorphic character in Animal Crossing games, much like the rest of the cast. However, his incessant demands for rent and the severe pressure he puts on a player are pretty heinous.

If players really think about it, then Tom Nook is basically ripping them off as often as possible. Sure, money is easier to generate in Animal Crossing after a point, but that doesn't justify this greed!

5 Dahlia Hawthorne — Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Dahlia Hawthorne from Phoenix Wright

In the final installment of the original Ace Attorney trilogy, Justice for All, Dahlia maintained the facade of being an innocent girl for the longest time. However, it was only when the cracks started appearing in her recollection of events that she revealed her true dark side.

Dahlia Hawthorne is an absolutely despicable character who tried to pin horrible murders on a young and inexperienced Phoenix — and concocted plans to commit bloody revenge even after she was convicted. It took a ton of effort from the best lawyers in the game to finally put an end to her reign of terror.

4 Kefka — Final Fantasy 6

Dissidia NT Final Fantasy VI Kefka Palazzo

Not many people would call Kefka adorable, given that his penchant for causing trouble rears its ugly head pretty quickly. However, there was a time when this character was announced where people genuinely thought he existed solely for comic relief purposes.

It's after his heinous actions that lead to the world falling into ruin that Kefka finally turns into the biggest threat in Final Fantasy 6. He's a force to be reckoned with, and his addiction to meaningless chaos and destruction is pretty disturbing at times.

3 Boo — Super Mario

At a glance, Boos seem like just another cute foe that Mario needs to deal with in the various games this character is featured in. However, there are some things about the Boo that are pretty disturbing, when people really put their mind to it.

For starters, the mere fact that Boos are the remnant of human spirits is pretty disturbing. Along with this, Captain Toad indirectly states that Boos actually eat humans in Super Mario Galaxy, which is quite spine-chilling!

2 Monika — Doki Doki Literature Club

A cutscene with Monika in Doki Doki Literature Club

To call Monika evil would be a bit unfair. The manner in which she dealt with learning she was nothing more than a computer program seemed pretty well-written, and it's only because of the futility of her existence that she even thinks about stopping the player in the first place.

Pretty much all the characters in Doki Doki Literature Club seem pretty endearing at first glance, before revealing their darker sides as the game slowly descends into insanity. Monika's unhinged nature is displayed more elegantly, but doesn't stop her from showing a really dark side.

1 Monokuma — Danganronpa

Danganronpa Monokuma

It's downright unbelievable that a cute teddy bear like Monokuma is somehow the most heinous character in the entirety of Danganronpa. The manner in which this character sends student after student to their death is cruel and unforgiving.

Monokuma doesn't waste any time in establishing his evil nature from the very moment he's announced. He might seem cute, but it's the literal and figurative dark side of Monokuma that shows what this character is all about — thriving on constant chaos and oppressive despair.
