Netflix has released the first trailer for director Noah Baumbach's next film, White Noise. The black comedy, based on the novel of the same name, stars Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig as the parents of a unique family who must survive a potentially apocalyptic event.

Netflix's new trailer for White Noise opens with a scene of chaos as one of Driver's kids wakes him up as panic ensues at what looks like some kind of shelter. The trailer takes a step back and introduces viewers to this very '80s-looking family as they go grocery shopping.

Driver explains the family's complicated dynamic, as each kid seems to be from a different marriage, and both Gerwig and Driver have been married and divorced four times. Despite the unconventional family unit, they seem happy as they go about their lives until an oil tanker crashes into a train, causing a toxic chemical to spew into the air. The family gathers around the TV, watching the news as Driver suggests they watch a sitcom "or something."

The trailer for White Noise continues as Driver tries to reassure his family that everything will be okay. However, he's abruptly interrupted by an evacuation order, so they pack up the kids and hit the road only to immediately run into a massive traffic jam as everyone attempts to evacuate at the same time. Things only get crazier as the family tries to navigate this disaster, witnessing cars flip over one another as people scramble to get out of town. They end up floating downstream in their station wagon as one of the kids ponders, "Do sheep have eyelashes?" Driver confides in a friend, played by actor Don Cheadle, who gives him some bleak advice, saying, "there are two types of people in this world: killers and diers."

White Noise will be Baumbach's 11th film and his first adaptation. It is also the director's 3rd time collaborating with Netflix after The Meyerowitz Stories and the 2019 drama Marriage Story, which also starred Driver. White Noise had its world premiere this year at the Venice Film Festival, receiving mostly favourable reviews from critics. Baumbach is known for his indie comedies, including the 2005 Academy Award-nominated film The Squid and The Whale. He has also collaborated with his partner Gerwig on several films, including Mistress America, Greenberg, and Frances Ha. He and Gerwig also co-wrote the script for the upcoming Barbie movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.

Based on the trailer alone, White Noise is sure to be a frontrunner for the 2023 Academy Awards. While some of his previous films have been nominated, Baumbach has yet to win an Academy Award. However, with his 11th film and first adaptation, Baumbach could be looking at a few Oscar nominations in the future, not to mention Driver and Gerwig, who are also sure to be potential nominees.

White Noise will be available in select theaters on November 25 before premiering on Netflix on December 30, 2022.
