Activision is developing a replacement to Destiny, a new leak has revealed. Destiny developer Bungie split from Activision in early 2019 and took the rights to the series with it leaving fans wondering what that could mean for the sci-fi RPG series.

On Twitter, gaming YouTuber TheGamingRevolution leaked several Activision games such as a rumored Tony Hawk's Pro Skater remaster and a free to play Call of Duty game that will released in 2021. One fan told the YouTuber that they were "disappointed" that Activision isn't developing a new IP and TheGamingRevolution responded that "there is a replacement to Destiny in the works." The YouTuber said that they don't know what this Destiny replacement is.

It's no surprise that Activision wants to create a new replacement for Destiny as that series is hugely popular and makes millions of dollars. The first Destiny set sales records for the company when it was released in 2014, Destiny 2's sales also performed well and the series makes money from the sale of DLC expansions and microtransactions at its Eververse store.

What would also have been important to Activision is that Destiny has an incredibly active community of players who play the game each day and talk about it a lot on social media. Declining player counts in games like Overwatch and Hearthstone led to lower Activision revenue and prompted the company to lay off hundreds of employees. Making a new game like Destiny could help Activision to grow its player counts in a big way.

It won't be easy for the company though and other publishers have tried and failed to copy Destiny's success. EA and BioWare tried to create a successful sci-fi RPG with Anthem. However, the game disappointed fans and criticis and now BioWare is working on a major Anthem reboot. Activision does have a strong hand here as it was the publisher of Destiny but that does't mean that it won't be difficult.

Activision also faces more competition. While Anthem could potentially grow its popularity, games like PS5 launch title Godfall have also been compared to Destiny and more publishers are releasing live service shooters. Destiny was an exciting title when it was released in 2014 but many games like it have been releasing since so if Activision wants to reach that same success, it's going to have to work very hard.

Destiny 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
