The upcoming mysterious PS5 project Abandoned has been the subject of conversation since it was unveiled earlier this year. This supposedly indie horror action game is being made by Blue Box Game Studios, a company with no other titles to its name. Things were blown out of proportion when a series of cryptic tweets from the studio seemed to imply the game would be a brand-new installment in the Silent Hill series, something fans have been clamoring for for years.

After a series of failed reveal events, Abandoned has gone quiet for several months. However, Blue Box recently announced a Prologue teaser coming soon, as well as a playable segment for players to enjoy leading up to the full release. It's important to keep expectations in check and not rush to conclusions. However, this announcement coming so close to The Game Awards as well as Sony heavily advertising the game on the PS Store seems to imply this may be more than just another small indie project.

Abandoned - A Long, Strange Road

Over the last few months, Abandoned has been the subject of much speculation. While some have taken Blue Box's word that it is indeed an indie game and brand-new IP, others have dug deep into the game's marketing and background and believe Abandoned is an elaborate ruse. Some have made theories that it is a new Silent Hill game by Hideo Kojima, while others believe it is a revival of the Metal Gear Solid franchise under Sony's supervision - Blue Box has denied any such rumors.

Whatever the case may be, the evidence presented seems to make a compelling argument that Abandoned is more than meets the eye. The most telling aspect of the game is that it is being backed by Sony, as well as being promoted on the official PlayStation YouTube channel. It begs the question why such a random indie game would get this much attention over dozens of others on the market.

The Timing of Abandoned's Prologue Tease

As mentioned earlier, Abandoned announced a Prologue segment will be available in early Q1 2022, providing players a first proper glimpse of the project. This announcement came just days before The Game Awards 2021, an event that usually has new game trailers presented alongside many awards.

Geoff Keighley has teased that there will be an announcement made at The Game Awards that has been over two years in the making. While this could be anything, Death Stranding is now two years old, with Hideo Kojima confirmed to already be hard at work on a new project. It could very well not be Silent Hill in the end, but the bizarre mystery of Abandoned is certainly his style, and considering Keighley is his good friend the curtain may finally be getting close to its resolution.

Anything can happen, and all of this should be taken with a grain of salt. However, there have been far too many clues regarding what Abandoned is for it to just come and go with no real fanfare. No matter what the project is in the end, hopefully it can live up to the high level of interest that it has generated since it was announced.

Abandoned will release in 2022 on PC and PS5.
