There's a lot to do in Techland's long-awaited zombie apocalypse sequel, Dying Light 2: Stay Human. Old Villedor, where the game takes place, is a sprawling city full of tons of different collectibles to pick up, events to experience, and enemies to fight.

But as they make their way through the zombie-ridden world, there are a lot of little things players are mistakenly doing wrong or much too early that only serves to hurt their overall experience with the game. To help gamers make the most of their playthrough, here helpful tips of what mistakes to avoid in Dying Light 2, and why.

8 Burning Out On The Open World Too Early

Dying Light 2 - An Overview Of The City From The Highest Building In-Game

Any completionist out there knows this feeling all too well. Once an open-world game opens up and allows the player to go anywhere, a completionist will almost always try and clear as much of the map as possible before continuing the story. Often, this leads to these players burning out on the core mechanics of the game earlier than they naturally should have, causing them to never finish the game's story.

Both for better and worse, Dying Light 2 is one of those games. Sure, players are "locked out" of the next area of the city until they complete a certain amount of the story, but there's still so much to do in the starting area. And, because things like the Paraglider (unlocked right after reaching the Central Loop) and Grappling Hook (unlocked at the VNC Tower) aren't available for a while, players are only experiencing part of the open-world of Old Villedor as they're intended to. So at least until the Paraglider is unlocked, players should avoid doing too much grinding within the Bazaar area.

7 Ignoring The Dumpsters Of Scrap

Dying Light 2 - Looking At One Of The Covered Areas Where The Dumpsters Are In-Game

One of the best early-game tips for DL2 is to try and farm as much Scrap as possible. All the Resources that Aiden scrounges for are used for something, be it a consumable, weapon, or even an explosive. But out of all of them, Scrap is used the most. There aren't any "guns" in the game, so Scrap is necessary for alternatives such as Throwing Knives, Molotovs, any explosives, and any of the Weapon Mods.

While the Infected do tend to drop decent amounts of Scrap, one of the best methods to farm it early on is to look for enclosed trash areas where the Bandits hide during their Encounters, or where the Goons tend to be during their night Encounters. These trash bins each hold a handful of Scrap, and players can easily obtain thirty or so just from searching them all.

6 Spending Way Too Much Time On Looting

Dying Light 2 - Seeing An Absurd Amount Of Different Lootables Through A Wall With Survivor Sense

Just like how DL2's open-world is built to scratch that itch for completionists, its looting system is built to keep hoarding-type players from moving through the game too quickly. Almost every single room has something to grab, search, or open. For the type of player who spends time grinding Potions in an RPG yet never actually use them in battle, this will easily have them spending way too long looting each area.

Yes, being vigilant with looting is the best way to find rare weapons, Inhibitors, and so on; however, it really isn't that important overall. Weapons are plentiful, Resources can be bought from Vendors, and there are tons of Inhibitors found throughout the story missions. So for players who already feel a bit burnt out early because of all the looting, don't focus on it so much! At the very least, only worry about stuff that's green or higher on the Survivor Sense. This should make progressing much easier.

5 Worrying About Gear

Dying Light 2 - Looking At How Small Of A Percentage Gear Can Buff In-Game

Speaking of lootables, let's talk about DL2's Gear system. While it's interesting that each piece of gear has a variety of effects, from Parkour XP to Damage Bonus During the Day, they really don't amount to anything noticeable overall. The "class system" that the game tries to push is basically nonexistent, and is almost entirely ignored unconsciously. Plus, the percentage increases are so minuscule, especially early on, that it really doesn't matter what a player wears.

Honestly, the best advice anyone could give is just to wear the gear that each player feels like they like the look of best, or at least gives bonus Combat or Parkour XP.

4 Don't Spam Inputs While Climbing

Dying Light 2 - Aiden Looking Down From Up High

The debate of Dying Light 2's Parkour compared to the Parkour in the first game is not something worth getting into at the moment, but there is a clear difference between the two titles. Because of this, it'll take a bit of experience for fans to get used to the way Aiden climbs stuff compared to DL1's Crane.

The best trick for players trying to "Hardcore Parkour" in DL2 is to be more precise with their inputs. Seems like a tip targeted toward beginners, but honestly it matters for everyone. Once Skills like the Wall Run or Double Jump are unlocked, spamming the jump button one too many times can have unintended results that could slow Aiden down or even lead to him falling to his doom.

3 Not Buying Out The Vendors Every Single Time

Dying Light 2 - Highlighting The Vendor Resources Section Of The Shop

This next mistake becomes more and more painful the longer players go on without realizing it. Every Vendor in Old Villedor has a certain stock of wares that auto-replenish all the time. And, every single one has a decent pile of Crafting Resources on-hand.

The big mistake players are making is not buying out all their Crafting Resources each and every time they're available. These materials cost nothing in terms of money, especially in comparison to how expensive weapons are. What's more, they're arguably much more useful than just one extra weapon.

2 Ignoring Zombie Trophies

Dying Light 2 - Highlighting The Backpack Menu Showing The Different Infected Trophies

Dying Light 2 has a new system for upgrading Blueprints, as it's all done at the Craftmaster NPCs now. In order to upgrade any one of these Blueprints, players are going to need Infected Trophies...a lot of them.

The Infected can drop these items on death, and there are specific ways to get each one. DL2 players will need a ton of these to get their Blueprints to max, yet many don't know the best way to go about getting them. The best methods involve going out at night or exploring in the dark, so maybe wait until the UV Light is unlocked. In any case, here is an easy way to get Trophies of each rarity.

  • Uncommon: Gained primarily by killing Virals or Howlers. Virals are the Infected that run at Aiden and are extra aggressive. Start a Chase at Night to get an infinite amount of these things to spawn.
  • Rare: Usually found on the buff Goon Infected that like to hang around at Convoys' or the Bolter Infected that are part of the Night Encounters.
  • Unique: Volatiles found in the GRE Hospitals can have these, as well as Revenants, Chargers, and Demolishers.

1 Putting Any Upgrades Into Health Early On

Dying Light 2 - Highlighting The Upgrade Section Showing A Big Divide Between Stamina And Health Upgrades

When it comes to Inhibitor upgrades, there lies the absolute biggest mistake any new player can make in the first ten to fifteen hours of Dying Light 2. Do not, under any circumstances, put those well-earned upgrade points into Health this early. Yes, a lot of the combat skills are locked behind a certain amount of Health, but those can be obtained later, and a decent early-game weapon will carry more than any combat skill would.

The combat, Parkour, and even exploration segments of DL2 all feel exponentially more slow and tedious with a smaller Stamina bar. Plus, skills like Active Landing, Far Jump, and Dart are all crucial for getting around the opening parts of the game with ease. Wait a little before investing in Health. At the very least, get the Stamina Upgrades to about four or five before even thinking about it.

Dying Light 2 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
