Whenever fans talk about older Nintendo games that they want on the Switch, the conversation usually centers on the Nintendo 64 and GameCube. However, recent trademark renewals by Nintendo may suggest that the company actually plans on bringing some of its 3DS games over to its handheld/home console hybrid instead.

Nintendo recently renewed a number of trademarks in Australia and South Korea for a variety of 3DS games. This includes titles like Steel DiverOcarina of TimeNintendogs + Cats, and Kid Icarus. And while Kid Icarus and Ocarina of Time aren't explicitly 3DS titles, they both had a major presence on the 3DS. Ocarina of Time was represented by the critically-acclaimed remake The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, whereas Kid Icarus was represented on the 3DS by Kid Icarus: Uprising.

The only game in Nintendo's list of trademark renewals that doesn't have a direct connection to the 3DS is Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, which was exclusive to the GameCube. Considering this, it's quite possible that these Nintendo trademark renewals mean nothing and are just the company doing its routine trademark renewal work. Beyond this, there has been nothing to suggest that Nintendo plans on porting any of its 3DS games to the Switch, so fans shouldn't get their hopes up.

That being said, Nintendo has an established history of bringing its older games to its new platforms ever since it launched the Wii's Virtual Console service. And in fact, the Switch already has retro games through the Switch Online service. It's not out of the question that Nintendo would look into bringing some of its bigger 3DS games to the Switch, especially since it did something similar on the Wii U with original DS games.

Then again, the logistics of bringing a 3DS game to the Switch may make the entire thing cost-prohibitive for Nintendo. The entire gimmick behind the 3DS is, of course, its 3D visuals, with some games actually building gameplay around the gimmick. Some titles would require major changes if they were to go from the 3DS to another platform, and so it remains to be seen if Nintendo has any big plans when it comes to bringing the 3DS library of games elsewhere.

It's an interesting possibility to consider, but fans can't put too much stock in trademark renewals. Video game companies renew their trademarks all the time, and it's almost never indicative of a new announcement. That being said, there are rumors that a Nintendo Direct is set to take place at some point this month, and so Nintendo fans should still have some big announcements to look forward to sooner rather than later, even if they have nothing to do with the games listed here.
