Another indie game has been announced for the PS5 and Xbox Series X next-gen consoles. Recompile is a 3D adventure-platformer announced several years ago for PC. Developer Phigames has remained hard at work in the time since and tentatively remains on track to launch Recompile in 2020. Phigames co-founder and Recompile programmer Phi Dinh partnered with Sony to offer PlayStation fans a new introduction to his game, while also confirming the game's development for next-gen platforms.

In a post published on the PlayStation Blog, Dinh breaks down some of the ways Recompile is more than just a typical action game. In Recompile, players take on the role of a self-aware artificial intelligence within a virtual world. Players will be able to define who this AI is and what they will become through their choices and action, resulting in different conclusions to Recompile's story.

The task of the AI is left mysterious, but it begins with infiltrating what's called The Mainframe. The Mainframe is completely open to explore in a seamless experience Dinh says suits the PS5 well. Within The Mainframe are a variety of biomes, each with their own fauna and structures. Players will be able to choose whether to hack the enemies, which can turn them against each other, or to directly engage them in combat.

Dinh goes on to explain that sci-fi films and shows like Tron and Reboot were a heavy influence on him. The idea of being trapped in a virtual world was especially compelling, which led him to study AI and machine learning. That's how the idea for Recompile was born.

It was only through Dinh meeting and partnering with Phigames co-founders James Marshall and Rochard Evans, who work on VFX/animation and sound respectively, that Recompile became an actual game. The contributions of each can be clearly seen in Recompile's trailers.

Speaking of trailers, Phigames put out a new trailer to coincide with the announcement that Recompile is coming to next-gen platforms. The trailer offers a loot at the variety of gameplay to be found in Recompile, but it does an even better job of showing off the game's diverse environments. Environments that vary from surprisingly natural scenes to completely cold and technological. All of it is very visually appealing, though. New fans will hopefully be seeing and hearing more about Recompile soon.

Recompile launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in 2020.
