During a recent interview with the news site, CVG, Tameem Antoniades, co-founder of Ninja Theory and chief designer of Heavenly Sword, said "to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye, and at least a 720p resolution. So in essence, that's 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec.” He went on to say “the technology's limited now, so you won't be able to play stuff that looks like Avatar - the movie - in 3D.”

As reported earlier today, Sony itself has even released statements denying 3D updates that were thought to be coming to some favorite titles on the PlayStation 3, such as Little Big Planet, Wipeout HD, Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, and Super Stardust HD.

Sony has a couple of planned updates for this summer to enable 3D functionality: one update for 3D gaming and another for 3D movies. With limited 3D-enabled 1080p televisions and the lack of 3D Blu-ray movies or games, one may wonder if these planned updates are being rolled out in order to provide us with access to a cool new technology or if Sony is really just trying to give us another reason to buy a new 3D TV.

While 3D TV’s may not be the most popular item at your local Best Buy right now, come next Christmas and Super Bowl season, don’t be surprised to see these hot commodities flying off the shelves. There are already several commitments to new HD 3D TV stations (DirecTV has a slate of channels scheduled for release this year) and lots of content coming before the end of the year, including the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Regardless of the quality and success of 3D gaming, Sony is poised to be ready for those early adopters, who are on the bleeding-edge, with the biggest technological fad of 2010.
