Sledgehammer Games, one of Activision's multiple Call of Duty studios, has gone through a bit of a transition these past couple years as both Co-Founders having left the company entirely. Sledgehammer first lost Glen Schofield very publicly in 2018, while Michael Condrey surprisingly revealed that not only had he walked away from Activision entirely, but he had since joined up with Take-Two and its 2K Games publishing department early in 2019. Nearly a year later, fans now have information on what Condrey has been up to at 2K Games.

The latest studio announcement from 2K Games is for 31st Union, a Silicon Valley based studio which is headed up by the aforementioned Michael Condrey. The new studio name likely references the fact that California was the 31st state to join the union back in 1850. Condrey also mentioned that the name and the studio itself is intended to represent the spirit of California and its role in defining the current golden age of entertainment and tech in Silicon Valley.

31st Union is off to an incredible start with a passionate and talented team, an intentioned culture that champions inclusivity and greater representation, and an ambitious and inspired new IP that we’re extremely excited about.

The company also features Tyler Michaud as its head of strategy and more than a few of its current team are comprised of former Sledgehammer Games employees who worked on various Call of Duty titles including Advanced Warfare and WWII. In addition to the Silicon Valley office, 31st Union followed other 2K Games studios by opening a second location in Spain. Unfortunately, no other details were provided as to what the studio is currently working on. Michaud confirmed that the team is focused on creating a brand new IP for 2K.

With this latest announcement, 2k Games now features four core studios with multiple locations around the world. In addition to 31st Union, 2k Games also features the newly created studio Cloud Chamber with locations in Novato, California as well as Montreal, Quebec. Hangar 13, the studio behind Mafia 3 also operates out of Novato while having two additional locations in Brighton, England and the Czech Republic. Finally, the eldest studio of the bunch, Visual Concepts, operates out of six locations including Novato and is primarily responsible for the 2K sports titles like NBA 2K.

It's been a busy couple of months for 2K Games as the company just recently details the addition of Cloud Chamber into its family of studios. To the surprise and delight of many fans, Cloud Chamber confirmed that it is the developer behind a brand new BioShock game, taking over for Ken Levine's former Irrational Studios. While neither 2K or Cloud Chamber were ready to discuss the game in any capacity, a job listing for the game hints that the studio is looking to continue the narrative-heavy and world building focus of previous games in the franchise.
