2K Games has a long history with the first-person shooter genre, with particular love in recent years for the likes of BioShock and Borderlands. As such, it will come as no surprise to learn that further first-person shooters are on the cards at the publisher, but it turns out that 2K Games is actually putting together a brand new team for one project.

That is, according to a number of job listings that have been posted over on 2K Games' website. The publisher is looking for a number of lead positions on this as-yet-unannounced game, such as Lead Gameplay Engineer, Lead Systems Designer, and Lead Technical Artist, as well as for the likes of a Principal Environment Artist and a Principal Animator.

The job listings themselves are all for 2K Games' headquarters in Novato, CA, and are not specifically listed for any of the other studios located there, such as Mafia 3 developer Hangar 13. With that in mind, it may well be that this new team is being kept separate from the other developers on site.

Although the job listings themselves don't give away much about what this AAA project is going to be, there are a few details that can be gleaned. For starters, the game is going to have a story-driven campaign, which will no doubt be a relief for those shocked by recent moves away from single player. Meanwhile, the job listing for the Lead Systems Designer hints at the player being involved in a sandbox world.

So, the project in question is narrative driven with sandbox elements, meaning that it sounds like it could be related to 2K Games property Borderlands. However, with 90% of Gearbox Software staff working on Borderlands 3, would a new team need to be set up purely to assist with the development of the game? Given that the job listings state that the project has yet to be announced, it may well be that something new is on the cards altogether.

All in all, it's good to see that 2K Games is looking to deliver what seems to be a campaign-driven experience, with all of these new major job listings pointing at a strong central narrative. Although hero shooter Battleborn has struggled, in general there has been a shift towards a pure multiplayer focus, and if 2K Games is looking to eschew this trend for a new project then those who like a story-focused experience could be in luck. However, it may well be some time before further details are released on the matter.
