The recreation of retro titles in newer engines, such as Far Cry 5's Dunia engine, is something that often happens when editing software comes with a new release. These are usually fairly rudimentary recreations, often vaguely resembling the original game in some way. In the case of Far Cry 5 though, the editor packaged with the game is actually quite powerful, and a new fan-made recreation of Rareware's Goldeneye 007 for the Nintendo 64 has been reconstructed faithfully and in high detail.

The custom map editor for Far Cry 5 is reasonably simple to get a handle on. Once the basics have been figured out, players can easily block out terrain and create their own scenarios using the tools available. Unlike many other editors, such as the Halo franchise's forge mode, players are not restricted to simply building geometry and terrain, they can actually delve into things like placing AI combatants and creating completable objectives.

In the case of Krollywood's Goldeneye remake, their proficiency is clear, with incredible recreations of all 18 levels from the Nintendo 64 classic being available to playthrough. The details are highly impressive, with maps like Archives and Facility looking almost identical to their 1997 counterparts, and even the less structured missions like Caverns and Surface capturing the feel of the originals. Krollywood has also shown the power of the Far Cry 5 editor by creating transitions between connected levels, with missions like Caverns and Cradle being part of the same map, allowing players to seamlessly move between them —something that would have blown 1997 gamers' minds.

Players can find the maps by searching for the PSN username "Perfect-Dark1982," with all 18 maps being fully playable and even containing enemies to take down. The project took Krollywood almost three years to complete, which is fairly impressive considering every level from the original game has been recreated, save for the two secret maps, and Krollywood has even included "Easter eggs" scattered throughout the missions. Krollywood's reconstruction of the game is so accurately done that many people online are lamenting that the various official remakes of Goldeneye haven't matched this fan-made standard.

For many, Goldeneye 007 was a formative gaming experience. It was the first console FPS to see major mainstream success and certainly one of the most well-regarded video games based on a film. Krollywood's work has certainly made it apparent how sad it was for fans to see the cancellation of what looked to be a fantastic Goldeneye remaster for Xbox Live Arcade. At least Krollywood's incredible remake of the game can give fans hope that if Far Cry 6 comes with similar editing tools, they can just keep remaking the game themselves.

Far Cry 6 launches October 7, 2021, on Luna, PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
