Ever since Nintendo announced they would be giving The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time the 3D re-release treatment for their shiny new 3DS console, many Zelda fans began to wonder if it was a one-off release or sign of a new initiative. More specifically, fans hoped that the existence of Ocarina of Time 3DS would mean that a Majora's Mask 3DS re-release would also be in the cards.

For a while there it was touch and go, with Zelda producers and directors teasing the possibility of Majora's Mask 3D, but never outright confirming it. Then, as part of today's Nintendo Direct, the handheld giant confirmed that, yes, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is coming. They also announced a Special Edition version of the release that includes a Steelbook case, a pin badge, and a poster.

While Nintendo didn't have much more to say than that, they did confirm that Majora's Mask 3D is targeting a Spring 2015 release in North America. That means Zelda fans shouldn't have to wait too long to get their hands on what is one of the more contentious entries in the Zelda library.

For some, Majora's Mask is one of the best franchise iterations, praised for its relentless timer and unique mask-switching mechanics. But for others it was a let down after the supreme high that was Ocarina of Time.

Perhaps this 3D re-release will help gamers come to appreciate Majora's Mask more than they did all those years ago, either with upgraded visuals or new gameplay options. Maybe Nintendo will even introduce new mechanics that make the time management more palatable for those who want a less stressful experience, but only as an added option.

Confirmation of Majora's Mask's existence also brings questions as to whether Nintendo might re-release any other Zelda titles in 3D. They've already done Ocarina of Time, and The Wind Waker got an HD facelift for Wii U, but perhaps the older titles might be next in line. For now, though, fans can take solace that Majora's Mask will get its due, and maybe a whole new generation will come to love this quirky Zelda title.

Are you excited to play (or replay) Majora's Mask on 3DS? What new features would you like to see added for this re-release?

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D is slated to release spring 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS.
