Reggie Confirms No ‘Zelda’ or ‘Kid Icarus’ at 3DS Launch

Kid Icarus 3DS

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed that Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D and Kid Icarus will not be ready for the Nintendo 3DS launch in March. Gamers who were hoping to snag one of these games at launch will have to wait until after E3 2011 where more info will be revealed on these and other 3DS titles.

This is dissapointing news, especially considering the buzz on how the launch title are weak, but Reggie did mention something very interesting in his interview: He said that there will be a little over 30 titles at launch, but didn’t specify if this will be on launch day or during the launch window. The idea of having 30 games to choose from in March is exciting, though it’s safe to say that he means during the launch period between April and June.

Reggie continues on to say that “from our perspective, we like to launch titles when they’re ready.” Nintendo is definitely making sure their games are polished before launching them on the new hardware. Given the company’s track record with first party titles on the DS, gamers can expect to see some awesome titles at this years E3.

Many gamers weren’t too keen on the Japanese 3DS launch lineup, and while there were some quality titles to look forward to, the list was a bit lacking in the “awesome department.” Let’s hope Nintendo has some surprises in store for the North American launch.

Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D

One thing some people may not have expected is Nintendo’s shift to pleasing the “hardcore gamer.” Nintendo has sold millions of consoles and games without directly addressing the hardcore audience, and it will be interesting to see what strategies Nintendo puts in place to attract this demographic. In the interview Reggie addresses the hardcore audience and mentions games like Super Street Fighter IV, Dead or Alive and Madden as games they should be looking forward too. These are strong major releases that everyone should be looking forward to, not just the “hardcore.”

Kid Icarus and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D are out of the picture for the March 27 launch of the 3DS. Does this alter your plans about picking up the new handheld, or have you already pre-ordered?

  1. This will now make me not buy the portable until Zelda arrives.

  2. More and more reasons to not buy this thing. Plus, NGP is looking gooood.

  3. I’m hoping to reserve the 3DS tomorrow….because I know if I wait and then it’s all sold out I’ll feel rubbish about it afterwards.

The launch lineup doesn’t seem too exciting…especially with the big buzz of games when the 3ds was first announced. I heard Paper Mario might be coming out in the launch window so I’m happy about that. (although I might have been looking at the japanese launch window. :( )

I’ll probably either get Street Fighter or Nintendogs + Cats……or I’ll just buy the 3DS and wait it out a week or two for more games to come along.

  4. This launch is on pace to be as bad as the PSP1s.

  5. Not a lot of promising launch titles for the 3DS coming from Nintendo. I’ll be picking up Super Street Fighter, but not entirely sure what else.

  6. have already pre ordered and still will be picking it up at launch day, the launch titles may be terrible but i’m sure that pokemon white (or street fighter) and some market games would keep me occupied until something good finally good comes to the 3ds.

  7. Boo! C’mon, Reggie! The 3DS needs a must-have launch title. Paper Mario or Pikmin would do it for me.

  8. I was seriously considering buying this on launch day, specifically for the souped-up version of Ocarina… The idea of carrying around a good-looking Ocarina of Time in my pocket, that is also in 3D, is almost too much to bear.
But, since the one game I want won’t be ready in time, I guess I’ll pass.
