In a world that keeps looking for the next Twin Peaks, it’s fitting that Showtime, the network that supplied 18 new episodes of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s creepy creation to the world, is also the network behind Yellowjackets, currently the twistiest vaguely-supernatural spookfest to air in years.

Deadline reports that Showtime has already greenlit an early third season renewal, months ahead of the second season’s March 26, 2023 premiere date. This should excite fans waiting to find out more of what happened to the titular girl’s soccer team while they were stranded out in the woods.

Yellowjackets, which got an order for a sophomore follow-up only 5 episodes into the first season, beat that record to the punch with a third season order coming months ahead of its March 26, 2023 season two premiere date. Part of the renewal comes from picking up the options of the vast cast which includes both actors portraying the current-day characters in the series as well as the younger ones playing their 1996 counterparts in the flashback sequences. That said, it also speaks to Showtime execs wanting to capitalize on the momentum picking up with word of mouth spreading like wildfire around the horror/suspense series.

Chris McCarthy, head of Paramount and Showtime Media Networks had this to say, “The show’s ambition is only exceeded by its execution, and I thank the incredible creative team behind it, including Ashley [Lyle], Bart [Nickerson], Jonathan [Lisco], eOne and the Showtime team, for turning this into such a success.” Yellowjackets become the second most-streamed Showtime series behind the Dexter: New Blood sequel series and fits with the network’s ongoing commitment to dark, sometimes violent dramas for adults.

Yellowjackets focuses on a girls' soccer team in 1996, the Yellowjackets of the title, who after a plane crash in the wilderness find themselves slowly succumbing to their more Lord of the Flies-style natures and violent tendencies. It reconnects with those same women as grown-ups in the current day as they try to unravel who might be blackmailing them and trying to bring the secrets of exactly what happened while they were stranded in the wilderness, secrets they’ve tried to bury, to light. Proving that the wilderness hardened them, the modern counterparts will do anything to keep those secrets buried. Season 2 will pick up where that left off.

Yellowjackets season 2 premieres March 26, 2023. Season 1 is streaming on Showtime.
