After a jaw-dropping season 1 finale, Showtime's Yellowjackets is getting ready to start production on season 2 and begin exploring more of the winter scenario showcased in both the pilot and final episode. Now, showrunners Ashley Lyle and Bart Nickerson teased what fans can expect from the series, which follows a group of high school soccer champions after a 1996 plane crash that leaves them stranded in the wilderness.

Yellowjackets involves two timelines: one of the team as they struggle to survive in the wilderness during the summer and another that focuses on the surviving members, who are now deeply traumatized adults, 25 years after the plane crash. Season 1 ended with Lottie Matthews, a.k.a The Antler Queen (played by Courtney Eaton), performing a ritual in which she placed a bear's heart on a make-shift altar before venerating it alongside Misty (Samantha Hanratty) and Van (Liv Hewson).

The scene, which takes place during the winter, anticipated some of the cult-like dynamics that would later emerge and culminate with Lottie and the group murdering and eating one of the survivors, an event that was shown in the series' pilot episode. While speaking to Variety, Lyle and Nickerson explained that Yellowjackets season 2 will return to the winter storyline, adequately titled "The Winter of Their Discontent" — a nod to John Steinbeck's book of the same name, which is at the same time based on a line from William Shakespeare's Richard III. According to Nickerson, season 2 is currently in "the writing process" and is expected to start production in late summer.

Nevertheless, the showrunners assure fans that they will create an environment that resembles the winter atmosphere in which the story takes place. "We’ve been in the writers’ room for several months now, and we’re circling a late summer production start", said Lyle. "But we’re starting those production conversations, and we have some really amazing and creative people on our team. So this will be movie magic at play."

Yellowjackets premiered in November 2021 and quickly became one of the most interesting and innovative shows of the last few years. In addition to Hanratty, the series stars an ensemble cast led by Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Sophie Thatcher, and Arcane's Ella Purnell. Yellowjackets also features Melanie Lynskey, Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress, and Christina Ricci as their adult counterparts.

The chilling landscape of season 2 is perfect for exploring how the cult was created and what relevance it may still hold in the present. Moreover, it will provide further insight into just how far the girls had to go to survive such a brutal environment and how that impacted their psyche. Therefore, Yellowjackets fans have a lot to look forward to when season 2 arrives, most likely, in late 2022.

Yellowjackets season 1 is now available to stream on Showtime Anytime.
