Microsoft confirms an update to the backward compatibility feature of the Xbox One, revealing that supported multi-disc Xbox 360 games can now be used on the console.

When Xbox 360 backward compatibility was revealed as a new feature for the Xbox One, many gamers were excited to be able to play some of the classics of the last console generation. There were, however, a few caveats that restricted access to certain games, with some titles unsupported due to an apparent inability to run multi-disc games with the feature. Now, Microsoft has confirmed that it has solved this particular issue.

Larry 'Major Nelson' Hyrb, Xbox Live's director of programming, revealed the news over on the Xbox One Reddit. "I can confirm that the BC team has done work to support multi disc scenarios," said Major Nelson on the thread. "Be sure to thank the BC engineers."

Indeed, some multi-disc games have already been added to the roster of backward compatible games. Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut was added to the program just this week, becoming the first multi-disc title to be available via the feature. It follows in the footsteps of the standard edition of the game, which was included in the backward compatible line-up for December of last year.

Further details surrounding the addition of multi-disc games were given by a Microsoft spokesperson to Polygon. "We know fans were asking for this feature and our engineers worked hard developing a solution to enable it so we could further expand the titles included in Xbox One Backward Compatibility," said the Microsoft representative. "We're continuing to listen to our fans on Xbox Feedback and work with our publishing partners to grow our library of Xbox One Backward Compatibility titles and will work to include more multi-disc games."

The move to bring in multi-disc compatibility is certainly one that will get the approval of fans. Indeed, it opens up the possibility of even more classics from the Xbox 360 getting a new lease of life on a current gen console. Although some of the most wanted games for backward compatibility have already been included in the feature's roster, such as Gears of War 3, plenty of others have yet to be confirmed - including the likes of Mass Effect 2, which use multiple discs.

Microsoft has been busily working on a number of workarounds to make sure that backward compatibility works as fans would expect, and this move to allow multi-disc games shows at the company is far from done with the feature. Hopefully, even more games can be added to the backward compatible roster going forward.
