Blessed with the power of cash-magnetism and an appeal that extends further than Mr. Fantastic, the X-Men franchise is currently enjoying something of a brand name renaissance. Half a Century on from the success of Uncanny X-Men #1, Marvel’s mutant heroes are storming bookshelves, cinema screens, and cell phones like never before.

Coinciding with the release of mutant-kind’s latest comic book crossover, X-Men: Battle of the Atom will swoop onto App Store and Google Play-equipped devices this Fall, bringing with it more card-based chaos than your average Gambit-centric fight scene.

Under development at social gaming studio GREE, Battle of the Atom will reintroduce 50 years worth of iconic X-Men adventures via a vividly realized ‘card fighting’ format. Featuring fresh artwork from some of Marvel’s most popular sketch-men, Atom’s time-twisting storyline tasks gamers with taking down a plethora of villains old, new and previously unknown.

With hundreds of iconic hero cards to choose from, including multiple iterations of the same character (the game’s trailer pits Cyclops against his alter-ego from the Days of Future Past storyline) fans can decide for themselves whether to dabble in unfamiliar rosters or level up a selection of series stalwarts.

Sanku Shino, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Developer Relations at GREE has also hinted at the possibility of multiplayer elements entering the mix, stating -

"X-Men: Battle of the Atom brings card battle to the next level… including cutting-edge features like team-battle… to allow fans to experience classic X-Men story arcs and characters in new and innovative ways."

Could Shino's talk of 'team-battle[s]' allow for wireless co-op and confrontational skirmishes, multiplayer-only ‘instances’ and, even an in-game trading circuit? They would certainly help give the title that much extra longevity, even going beyond the myriad of updates already promised for the game.

We spotted the following folks in the game’s debut trailer. (Check it out for yourself at the top of the article).

  • Wolverine (‘Days of Future Past’, ‘Old Man Logan’, Astonishing X-Men)
  • Cyclops (Original Uncanny X-Men #1, New Uncanny X-Men #1, Astonishing X-Men, Marvel NOW, Dark Phoenix)
  • Sentinels
  • Colossus (New Uncanny X-Men)
  • Emma Frost (New Uncanny X-Men)
  • Beast (Marvel NOW)
  • Angel (Marvel NOW)
  • Iceman (Marvel NOW)
  • Jean Grey (Marvel NOW, Dark Phoenix)
  • Apocalypse (X-Force)
  • Magneto

X-Men: Battle of the Atom will appear on App Store & Google Play equipped devices sometime in the Fall. An early September release date is expected.
