There are typical World of Warcraft players, but then there are the commonly mocked World of Warcraft junkies.
These people live, breathe, sleep, and eat Warcraft. We have all seen the hilarious videos on Youtube, but on Sunday night at 10p.m. a man by the name of James Swan got a little too into the game.
James Swan is 27 years old and lives with his mother, and this past Sunday he had some drinks and started playing his favorite game World of Warcraft while intoxicated. He was getting a little loud and it was quite late, so his mother went and asked him to quiet down so that the 5 other small children in the house could get some sleep.
Apparently, Swan didn’t get the message the first time; his mother went to ask if he could quiet down once more.
Swan then grabbed his mother by the hair and threw her onto the bed in his room. Swan’s little brother came in and tried to intervene, but he was then tossed right onto his mother.
Swan’s mother got up and ran to the kitchen to call 911, only to have the phone ripped from her hands and then the wall. As Swan’s rage peaked, he seemed to enjoy the destruction he was causing, so he put his head through the kitchen wall. After that theatrical display, he threw his mother onto the floor and began chocking her, all the while yelling he was going to kill her.
Around this time Grandpa heard the commotion and hobbled out of his room to see what was going on. He realized that his grandson was strangling his daughter, whom at this point had blacked out, and he moved into action!
Unfortunately, he couldn’t stop the young man so he went to his room and returned with his revolver. Swan got up and started wrestling with Grandpa for the gun that was now threatening his World of Warcraft career. During this match-up, the trigger was pulled and a bullet glanced off of Swan’s head and out the living room window.
James Swan was taken to the hospital, but refused treatment so he was thrown in jail.
Stories like these are always a good read, but they usually shine a negative light on video games; odds are this would have happened regardless of what James Swan was doing. What if he was watching football and this happened? We wouldn’t blame Peyton Manning, so I really hope there is no backlash coming from this.

“odds are this would have happened regardless of what James Swan was doing.” so why report on it. why not focus on the $1 million WoW'ers donated to Make A Wish through the Blizzard pet store. Isn't that more meaningful than reporting on some psycho fringe psycho? Sigh.
We did.

oooh PWND
stfu wow junkie.
blizzard makes 9 digits annually, and this is the 1st i've heard of them actually doing something good with the money (instead of spending it on lawsuits etc).
i know it wont happen but i really hope WoW dies… very painfully.
“We wouldn’t blame Peyton Manning, so I really hope there is no backlash coming from this.”
Of course there will be. It's clear that alcohol was the main culprit here (that and the guys psychosis), but some people love blaming video games for stuff like this.
These stories are pointless hoe many times do we hear “man watching soccer game (someplace in Europe) baby was crying he threw out the window…
Does that mean i can not watch a soccer game?
No it does not it just means some people have issues and should be treated…
World of Warcraft was the center of this domestic dispute. If it had been about a guy going crazy over an episode of Oprah then I'm sure The National Inquirer would cover it.
As Mr. Sileo mentioned we did cover that… Sigh.
It doesn't mean I can't hope!
There is usually some form of negativity put on the game industry after things like this
What'll likely happen is people get a little PO'd for a while, some tabloids start warning about the dangers of video games and then everything will go back to normal.
I mean if all those school shootings haven't changed anything, I'm pretty sure one guy beating on his family won't tip the scales.
Haha it's so true
I doubt he posted it as a precautionary tale.
Stories like these remind us how silly it is to get upset about videogames. I think it's a good reminder (not because we're all going to choke our loved ones) but because there's certainly more to life than leveling up, high scores, and leaderboards.
