In the World of Warcraft, Moonkin come in all shapes and sizes. The majority of them are large and frightening creatures, but surely their children are much more adorable. Later this month, World of Warcraft player will have the opportunity to find out. President of Blizzard Entertainment Mike Morhaime confirmed today in an Activision Blizzard earnings report that the Moonkin Hatchling companion pet will be available for purchase late this month.

Half of all proceeds for the Moonkin Hatchling will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, similar to how the Pandaren Monk companion was sold in November 2009. The Pandaren Monk sale raised over $1.1 million for Make-A-Wish, and hopefully the little Moonkin will be similarly philanthropic.

One could argue that it's within Blizzard's power to donate as much as 75% or even close to 100% of the profits with little to no loss, but it's worth being thankful that they're donating anything at all. Blizzard could just as easily release a star pony and take all of the profits for themselves. It's good to see Activision Blizzard in the giving mood, especially this time of year.

What would be especially great is if Blizzard tied in the sale of the Moonkin Hatchlings to the lore of the upcoming Cataclysm release. Perhaps the Deathwing's rampage has displaced a number of Moonkin families and adopting a lonely Hatchling is a player's way of helping these poor troubled beasts. Lore or not, Boomkin Druids are certain to be happy having a baby Boomkin following them around.

Are you excited for the new Moonkin Hatchling companion, Ranters? Would you have preferred a different pet? Will you be purchasing one, either to make a charitable donation for the holidays or just because you love the Moonkin? Should Blizzard turn this into a yearly activity (or is that what it is already)?

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm launches on December 9. Are you prepared?
