When a game gets a cult following like the one behind Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, there are bound to be some die hard fans. At Blizzcon this year a fan asked a question during a panel discussion with WoW’s developers, confirming a error between the lore and the world in Cataclysm. Strangely reminiscent of the Simpsons episode where Comic Book Guy called out the Itchy and Scratchy writer, this particular fan was then dubbed the Red Shirt Guy.

The question that stumped the developers was particularly detailed, but the method of delivery is what really made the Red Shirt Guy standout.

"Hello. I just finished reading The Shattering yesterday, and I noticed something. It said that Falstad Wildhammer was going to be on the Council of Three Hammers, but in the beta, it's Kurdrin Wildhammer, and Falstad is not in the game at all. What happened to him?"

Blizzard Creative Lead Chris Metzen thought Falstad might be dead, but the Red Shirt Guy insisted that was incorrect. After a round of applause from his fellow WoW fans, the developers just stared blankly at him and said they would resolve that issue.

While it’s unclear how the World of Warcraft developers have corrected the storyline in the December 7 Cataclysm release, Blizzard has confirmed that a new NPC will be entering the game.  Wildhammer Fact Checker, notably wearing a red shirt, will be a new NPC that will more than likely poke humor at Blizzard’s mistake.

Many fans of the Red Shirt Guy have pointed out he posed his question quite robotically. Some people took this to think the die hard WoW fan may have a mental handicap, but Red Shirt Guy came out to explain the situation. While the Red Shirt Guy has stated that he has Asperger Syndrome, the reason he was speaking robotically was due to his nerves. Clearly when you are such a fan as he proves to be, asking a question to your favorite games developers would probably make anyone nervous. To challenge the creators on the other hand, now that takes a rare kind of courage.
