Watch Dogs Higher Resolution PS4

Before it slipped to 2014, Ubisoft's Watch Dogs was one of, if not the, most highly anticipated launch titles for the next-gen consoles. More importantly, it was a game that many thought would leverage the power of these new systems in some creative ways.

Although Watch Dogs is no longer the hopeful launch title, it's still one of the biggest releases of this year. And as a result, a lot of attention has been paid to almost every facet of the game, from its unique take on multiplayer to its pre-order bonuses.

One element of Watch Dogs that seems to be getting quite a bit of attention as of late, however, is the game's resolution. Obviously, if the trailers are to be believed, we know the game is going to look great, but just how great is yet to be determined.

What we do know at this point, though, is that the game might look just a tiny bit better on the PS4, this according Watch Dogs' Cinematics Animation Lead Lars Bonde. In an interview with PC Games, Bonde reveals that the development team at Ubisoft is "using the Xbox One to its full capabilities and the same with the PS4, of course, so I know that, as far as to my knowledge, on PS4 it will run in full HD."

Now, it's important to point out that Bonde does not say the Xbox One version of Watch Dogs will not run in 1080p, but he doesn't say it will either. It seems strange that he would he would specifically state the PS4 version does hit the 1080p threshold if the Xbox One did also, but we'll let you make of that what you will.

At the same time, said PC Games interview with Lars Bonde has since been taken offline, suggesting it has sparked a little unnecessary controversy. He also goes out of his way to say this in the interview, which further fuels the fire:

"The first thing I want to make clear is that, at its core, it's the same experience on current-gen and next-gen consoles. You get the same gameplay out of it."

Just last month we reported on some unofficial claims that Watch Dogs ran at 1080p/30fps on PS4 and 960p/30fps on Xbox One, and now that seems all but confirmed by Ubisoft. Granted, it's a slight difference, and a negligible one for most gamers, but the game still might run at a higher resolution on PS4.

While discussions of resolutions in next-gen games might soon become a non-issue, the fact of the matter is gamers want to know if there are any differences from one version to the next. Unfortunately, we likely won't get any official confirmation from Ubisoft regarding frame rates or resolutions, so gamers will have to wait until the game hits stores at the end of May.

Which platform are you planning to play Watch Dogs on? Do you think 1080p resolution is important if the game looks great on any console?

Watch Dogs releases May 27, 2014 for the PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. No Wii U release date has been announced.
