Lee and Clementine in The Walking Dead season 1

The zombie motif is an apt one for Telltale Games' The Walking Dead, which left gamers insatiably hungry for more after its gripping first season. The Walking Dead takes place in the same world as the comic books and TV show and has occasionally featured characters from the main series, but instead of sitting back and watching, the player is forced to live through the zombie apocalypse and to make decisions that are often excruciatingly difficult. The first season received masses of both critical and audience acclaim, and has won over 90 Game of the Year awards from various outlets. We kind of liked it too.

Many of those choices were tied into Lee, the playable character, and his guardianship of Clementine, a young girl who was separated from her parents when the outbreak occurred. Clementine is well-developed, complex and thoroughly likeable, and her attitudes being constantly shaped by the example that Lee sets to her. A lot of players ended up falling in love with her over the course of the first game, and left anxious to find out more about what happens to her.

Fans of Clementine can now rejoice... sort of. A tease from Telltale Games on Twitter contains a small hint at some kind of reveal to come this week, with the simple image of Clementine's hat lying abandoned on the grass against a backdrop of zombies and a date/time underneath it. The image is captioned with the painfully familiar phrase, "Keep that hair short."

It's great to see that Clementine will apparently be returning, but it's hard not to be concerned about what might have caused her to leave her hat behind. In all of its incarnations across various media, The Walking Dead has not been sparing to child characters and even fan favorites aren't safe from the cruelty of fate (and zombies). Clementine's story last ended on a frustratingly ambiguous note, so it's hard to guess at where we might find her next.

It's a pretty safe bet that this teaser image is the precursor to a trailer for season 2, as well as an announcement of the release date for the first episode. It would be nice to think that the first episode will suddenly just appear on Steam tomorrow, but sadly that's probably not what Telltale is hinting at. In the meantime, at least fans can always look forward to further installments of Telltale's other comic book adaptation, The Wolf Among Us, which is based on the "Fables" series by Bill Willingham. There's also the DLC for The Walking Dead, 400 Days, which features short snapshots of new characters who could potentially be featured in the second season.

I have many feelings about this upcoming reveal, though unfortunately most of them were uttered at a pitch too high for human hearing. Keep an eye on Game Rant tomorrow to find out what Telltale Games has to show us.
