Reedus and Rooker Confirmed Walking Dead Game

With Telltale Games' version of The Walking Dead already generating a ton of accolades for it's story focused adaptation of Robert Kirkman's graphic novel, Activision and developer Terminal Reality's The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct was going to need something to set itself apart. Part of that distinction will come in the form of the title's gameplay, as this will be a first-person-shooter, but more than that this version of The Walking Dead will draw inspiration from the AMC series rather than Kirkman's text.

As a result, Terminal Reality has recruited actors Norman Reedus and Michael Rooker to reprise their roles of Daryl Dixon and Merle Dixon, respectively, for the upcoming game. Rooker is no stranger to video game voice acting — he has provided voices, and his likeness, for several entries in the Call of Duty franchise including Black Ops 2 — but this will be new territory for Reedus.

For those that might know Survival Instinct will follow Daryl Dixon (Reedus) and his brother Merle (Rooker) as they fight their way towards Atlanta, which was originally thought to be a safe haven for survivors of the zombie outbreak. As the TV show and comic book have already informed us, however, Atlanta is a cesspool of "walkers," which should make for a very engaging FPS experience.

More importantly, as fans of the series will recognize, Daryl's weapon of choice is the crossbow — a mighty useful tool during the outbreak. Many games use the crossbow as a secondary or one-off weapon, but if Terminal Reality's game stays true to the spirit of the character, gamers could be in for an arrow-spewing good time.

However, the fact that Robert Kirkman is not directly involved with the game — like he is with the AMC series and was with Telltale's episodic series — suggests Terminal Reality will take some liberties in developing Daryl and Merle as characters, despite knowing where they will end up. Could make for an interesting prequel, or a total failure.

What do you think about this Walking Dead video game telling the story of Daryl and Merle? What types of combat do you hope to see?

The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct is scheduled for a 2013 release on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
