With over a decade under its belt, The Walking Dead will come to a close this year with its 11th and final season. A new trailer has been released for the hit AMC series and in it, the group comes face to face with a brand-new threat.

This portion of The Walking Dead is derived from The Rotton Core, the 31st volume of the comics that inspired the zombie series. It centers around the group’s exploration of The Commonwealth and their governor, who will be played by Laila Robins. The first official glimpse of Robins in the role of Pamela Milton appears in the latest Walking Dead trailer.

The new trailer for The Walking Dead provides an updated glimpse of some series fan favorites. Early on, there is a glimpse of Daryl, Maggie, Aaron, Carol, and Judith creeping through the apocalypse. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan is also spotted in the trailer, continuing to push the buttons of various group members, particularly Maggie. With internal conflicts still brewing, the group is forced to put them aside as an impending group of stormtroopers approaches their gates on horseback. The trailer eventually provides an inside look at Pamela Milton, as she gives an oddly inspiring and intimidating speech, vowing that The Commonwealth looks to put “the world back together the way it was.”

The Walking Dead trailer continues to show Daryl, Maggie, Carol, Aaron, and many other members across their long list of allies fighting Walkers or exploring the eerily perfect world that exists within The Commonwealth. Other shots show the stormtroopers fighting the zombified corpses, though it seems to build to an eventual fight between the two living groups. In the midst of this action-packed sequence, Rosita receives a warning that The Commonwealth is, “a city from before where people who can’t fit in, get cast out.”

As the group prepares to square off against Governor Milton and The Commonwealth, the trailer reminds viewers that many of The Walking Dead's previous feuds are far from over. Most notable amongst them is the ongoing tension between Maggie and Negan, which began in the first episode of season 7, where Negan killed not only Abraham but Glenn as well. Glenn and Maggie got engaged in “This Sorrowful Life” (season 3, episode 15) and following Glenn’s death, Maggie eventually gives birth to their son, Hershel, named after Maggie's father who was killed by the Governor in the middle of season 4.

With tensions looming high, The Walking Dead's final season has plenty of reasons to tune in. For long-term fans of the series, finally witnessing how these characters will end their journeys is promising enough. Others may tune in with the hopes of seeing a few familiar faces make a return before The Walking Dead's final episode airs later this year. While there are no signs of Rick or Michonne making a triumphant return, with the group embarking on a new journey, it’s impossible to know where any of them will end up.

The Walking Dead premieres on February 20, 2022, at 9 p.m. ET on AMC. It will also be available one week early on February 13 only on AMC Plus.
