Yennefer of Vengerberg is undeniably a powerful Mage in The Witcher 3: Wild HuntShe's arguably the most powerful sorcerer the game has to offer. This is one character that quickly rose to become a favored heroine. This self-sufficient character has risen to become a fan favorite because of her strength in battle and as a character.

While Yennefer is largely unrivaled in her own series, there are other magic users in games that outclass her. Should she be matched up against any of the following characters, it's hard to see her coming out on top. While she may remain unmatched as a character overall, her powers are not infallible.

10 Roxas (Kingdom Hearts II/III)

Video Game Mages Roxas Kingdom Hearts III

A character that outranks Yennefer despite his age is Roxas. Roxas hails from the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Serving as one half of the main character Sora's being, he holds half of the protagonist's power within him at any given time. While he is known to use his signature Keyblades Oathkeeper and Oblivion in unison, Roxas is also a powerful wielder of magic.

He uses the abilities of both light and dark in conjunction with his swordsmanship. These include elemental abilities as well as light beams and shields. In a harrowing battle with his counterpart Sora in Kingdom Hearts II, Roxas unleashes his full might, nearly besting Sora. He is ultimately defeated. In Kindom Hearts III he makes a triumphant return on the side of good, utilizing his powers to a greater extent as he has been made whole.

9 Colette Brunel (Tales of Symphonia)

With a label like the Chosen One, it's no surprise that Colette Brunel is a magical powerhouse. Colette is one of the main characters from Tales of Symphonia. With the power of an angel, her mission is to heal the entire planet single-handedly. Doing so takes an unparalleled amount of power. Only a divine being would be capable of such a feat.

On the battlefield, Colette uses chakrams and angelic magic to dominate enemies. She even sprouts wings that can be used to fly and attack adversaries. While Yennefer is powerful, she isn't the descendant of an angel. It's unlikely she'd be able to handle the power of a chosen hero.

Tasked with erasing the all-encompassing evil known as Sin like her father before her, Yuna must gain the strength to summon aeons powerful enough to defeat it. While she is accompanied by her guardians on her pilgrimage, Yuna is an irreplaceable magic-user. With massive beasts backing her in a fight, it's unsurprising that few could hope to best her.

As the Archangel of Justice, Tyrael fought to preserve the rights of all. As with all angels, Tyrael serves as a bastion against the demons. They have served as the opposition to the pawns of Diablo since the dawn of creation. Tyrael especially was famous for standing in to protect humankind when the demons aimed to destroy them. Although he uses a sword primarily, he often uses mage-like powers such as magical barriers and light beams.

While Tyrael has lost his immortality, he serves as the Aspect of Wisdom. This mortal angel continues his quest to protect humanity. While he can die, he harbors much of the power he did when he was the Archangel of Justice.

Princess Zelda may not be playable in The Legend of Zelda: The Breath of the Wild but she the most powerful force in the fight against Ganon. When Link and the other champions fell in the first fight against Calamity Ganon, Zelda was left to fight the evil alone for an entire century.

Link may eventually deal the finishing blow to the antagonist, but even so, Zelda's light and sealing magic were integral to Ganon's downfall. It may have taken this princess some time to awaken to her full power, but the results were substantial. Forcing a seemingly unstoppable force into a stalemate for 100 years is something only the most powerful mages could accomplish.

2 Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII)

It's no exaggeration to say the Final Fantasy VII is one of the most popular games of its time. That's due largely in part because of the iconic villain Sephiroth and his epic theme. The foil to Cloud is as powerful as he is intimidating. Known as the greatest SOLDIER 1st class to ever exist, his swordsmanship is first class. This adds a deadly physical strength to compliment his almighty magic abilities.

Sephiroth can call forth an incredibly destructive force with the magic Meteor. This spell is so strong it can devastate an entire planet. Even without this spell, Sephiroth can use all manners of elemental magics to further bolster his battle efficiency. These include Shadow Flare and Supernova, attacks that fans of the franchise will make any veteran shudder.

1 Donald Duck (Kingdom Hearts Series)

Those who don't follow Kingdom Hearts may be shocked to see Donald Duck outranking Sephiroth as a mage, but those who played Kingdom Hearts III will know that this duck packs a punch. Donald casts Zettaflare to save his friends at the end of the game and demolish one of the bodies of Xehanort.

While the move ultimately costs him his life, it shows that Donald Duck can pull off the strongest spell in the entire Square Enix magic catalog. Only three beings have ever cast this spell. Not even Sephiroth has accomplished this feat, and with this knowledge, it stands to reason that Donald would reign supreme among mages.
