Platinum Games’ (Bayonetta, MadWorld) latest project, Vanquish, a third-person shooter featuring a guy in a suit with guns, will be lacking a multiplayer component. What? Preposterous, right? Well, Shinji Mikami talked with Eurogamer about the omission of a feature that is more or less a staple of most games released:
“Vanquish is very intense, full of action. There are just so many things going on. When you take that into a multiplayer environment, then you have to realistically consider shaving a lot of things off and putting them into your multiplayer environment.
It kind of boils down to whether you have the multiplayer but you don’t have that much impact, and end up being like everyone else. Or even below par. So that’s the main reason we’re keeping Vanquish as a single-player experience — to deliver the level of impact, the level of detail and the visuals we want to offer.”
Mikami’s justification is very sound, and those of you who played Bayonetta probably didn’t have a problem with the lack of multiplayer. As much as games are fun to play with friends, sometimes there is a craving for a very good single player experience. If Mikami can deliver on this, Vanquish has the makings to be something fun, if not a little fresh. Although, one can’t help but wonder: Why not include a co-op multiplayer? If games like Gears of War can manage it, I’m sure a lot of games can end up handling it. Though, that’s a question that can be asked for a great deal of games that don’t include co-op game types.
Vanquish is slated to save the world some time in Winter 2010. Hopefully, it won’t be too late by then.

NO offense but Gears of War is not a good game to make a point with. (My opinoin) It is a glitchy mess half the time in multiplayer. The co-op is nice but really to me I like that fact they want to make a single-player exp that you will remember for a long time. I agree multi-player is fun, but sometimes (it seems) that multiplayer may cut from the main exp which is the fact it is a story driven game. Just stating my opinoin doesnt mean I think anyone is wrong or right for wanting one single-player, multiplayer, or co-op.
