The Uncharted series is one of the keystones of Sony's PS3 catalog. Not only have each of the games expanded on the prior iteration, but developer Naughty Dog has managed to translate the feeling and energy of a Hollywood blockbuster into the gaming medium more effectively than any other developer.

Now, gamers are able to get their first look at the newest feature of Uncharted 3, it's cooperative play.

While co-op gameplay isn't a new feature to the Uncharted series, Naughty Dog looks to be treating the Uncharted 3 co-op in a similar manner to the game's campaign. Rather than simply teaming gamers up to complete missions in a tacked-on game mode, Uncharted 3's co-op looks to continue with the trend of translating the experience of an action-packed Hollywood blockbuster into an engaging gameplay experience.

Although no solid details regarding the mode have surfaced, Naughty Dog has put together a trailer that showcases the mode's intense gunplay and the series' trademark exploration mechanics.

One of the first things that players will notice is that the game looks just as beautiful as ever in co-op mode. This is no surprise considering the high bar the series continually sets, but it's good to see that the graphics have not been scaled down noticeably.

As with the campaign and multiplayer modes present in Uncharted 3, the game's animations are as fluid as ever and look especially impressive as Nathan Drake and his companion scale a crumbling wall in unison. Most gamers overlook how important realistic, fluid movements are in creating an immersive gaming experience. Nathan Drake, while a simple video game character, feels more human than the average character in gaming and his movements are a big help in achieving this effect.

While there are no details regarding the nature of the game's co-op, it looks as if gamers will be teaming up in order to collect and deliver treasure from various scenic locales. Since this is Nathan Drake though, it can't be that easy - and gamers can expect quite a sizable force of enemies to stand between them and their treasure.

Uncharted 3 Co-op Trailer

As enemies are dispatched and treasure collected, it looks as if gamers are awarded points and money. Could this be a sign that, like Uncharted 2, progress in both the co-op mode and the game's multiplayer will be linked? Other games like Halo: Reach have managed to effectively implement this in the past and is a logical progression for games in order to unify the different gameplay experiences present on the disc, breaking the walls between single-player, competitive multiplayer, and cooperative multiplayer.

As E3 2011 draws near, less than a week away, there's no doubt that Sony has big things in store for the Uncharted series. Not only did Uncharted 3 make it onto Game Rant's list of top 10 most anticipated confirmed games, but it will also, undoubtedly play a big part in Sony's press conference.

What do you think Sony will announce at their press conference in relation to the Uncharted series? Do you like the looks of the game's co-op mode so far?

Uncharted 3 is set to hit shelves on November 1 for the PS3. For those of you that don't want to wait though, the game's beta will be kicking off on June 28.
