Regardless of what genre a video game falls under, most titles have some sort of opening cinematic sequence to detail and tease what happens in the game and to introduce the story/characters to the players. Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 is no exception even if it is a bit light on the story and with the game's release almost here, (see our UMVC3 review) Capcom has decided to unveil the game's opening cinematic for everyone to see.

Those of you expecting a series of flashy, exciting battles between the characters like in the original Marvel vs. Capcom 3 opening may be a bit disappointed. The new opening for the Ultimate re-release doesn't do the same thing with any of the new characters, possibly to avoid the implication that there is a story mode in this title. Nonetheless, it is still a cool and exciting way to start Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 0ff.

You can judge for yourself by viewing the trailer below.

Some may notice that this is really just an extended version of the Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 trailer seen way back at the Tokyo Game Show in September, with still images of the characters fighting one another. It was really well done in its use of 3D still images even though it was just still images. However, they are still very impressive to look at, and paint some entertaining scenarios that would be fun to play out in the game itself. Some of the new ones really stand out, include Chun Li vs. Iron Fist, Super Skrull against Crimson Viper and Frank West, and especially Magneto taking on Galactus all by himself.

It's possible the opening was hinting at the new Heroes and Heralds mode featured in the re-release, with heroes and villains from both sides squaring off against one another to decide whether or not Galactus devours the planet. This may even be the game's way of telling us that Heroes and Heralds is the closest thing we'll get to a story mode for the game. That may be disappointing to some, but if the feature is still fun to play, it's a win.

What did you think of the opening video? Will you be picking up Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3?
