Ubisoft has long been one of the premiere third-party publishers for console launches. The France-based video game publisher has cranked out titles for almost every noteworthy system launch in recent memory, and that’s why it’s not even remotely surprising to hear that Ubisoft plans on providing plenty of content for Nintendo’s Wii U.
What may be surprising to some is that Ubisoft doesn’t only plan on providing a solid amount of games for the Wii U, but they intend on being the “number one third-party” on the system.
During an interview with Gamasutra, Ubisoft’s SVP of sales and marketing, Tony Key, confirmed that Nintendo’s new console won’t be short on support from his company. With games like Assassin’s Creed 3, Ghost Recon Online, and Killer Freaks From Outer Space all currently confirmed to be in development for the Wii U, there’s no doubt that Nintendo’s new console will abound with Ubisoft-produced entertainment. However, Ubi has much larger goals than just providing content for the next-gen system.
“We have big plans for Wii U. Our intention is to be the number one third-party on Wii U, just like we were on Kinect and just like we were on 3DS.”
Furthermore, Key confirmed that Ubi can credit their “close relationship with Nintendo” for getting the Wii U dev kits earlier than a few other unnamed developers – allowing Ubisoft’s studios to churn out content in a timely manner.
“We’ve always had a really close relationship with Nintendo, so I’d venture to say that we did have an advantage in getting dev kits earlier than other people. I’m not saying we got them earlier than everyone, but I do think we got them early.”
With E3 2012 quickly approaching, details on the Wii U are only two months away, so hopefully all of our questions will be answered very soon. It’ll be interesting to see everything Ubisoft has been hard at work on, as one would assume that they’ve got more up their sleeves then is currently known to be in development.
