Yesterday came the official word from Activision that Transformers: War for Cybertron 2 was officially coming next fall, titled Transformers: Fall of Cybertron. We know the game will remain Cybertron-based so that sets our expectations for character designs and the aesthetic since the series isn't moving to Earth just yet  but we don't know what characters will be introduced... outside of Grimlock. Grimlock!?

Yes, Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is taking the cover of the November issue of Game Informer and in addition to featuring franchise poster boys Optimus Prime and Bumblebee on the covers, Grimlock, the infamous Generation 1 Dinobot is there too!

Grimlock is the bad-ass, fearless leader of the Dinobots, taking the form of a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Why he would take this form on Cybertron makes absolutely no sense so either we can just take fiction for what it is and accept that Fall of Cybertron doesn't follow its own rules or Earth does play a factor in the Transformers: War for Cybertron sequel and the game will lead into the story we all know and love as the origins of the Transformers franchise with the animated series - a setting we thought would represent the potential third game in the series.

Combat prowess aside, Grimlock has a bit of a speech impediment, referring to himself and commonly saying "Me Grimlock." Yes, you are Grimlock. Good boy!

Looking at the bigger picture though, the inclusion of Grimlock also means we can expect the rest of the Dinobots (listed below) and hopefully, their voice actors as well.

  • Slag (Triceratops, Second-in-command). Voiced by Neil Ross.
  • Sludge (Apatosaurus). Voiced by Frank Welker.
  • Snarl (Stegosaurus). Voiced by Hal Rayle.
  • Swoop (Pteranodon). Voiced by Michael Bell.

In the original animated series, Wheeljack created the Dinobots who often found themselves parting ways with the Autobots but always rejoining at key moments. How will their origins be explained in Transformers: Fall of Cybertron and will they be able to combine to form a super Autobot like in some incarnations of the Dinobots? We'll have to wait and see.

Fans of War for Cybertron and the Transformers universe should check back soon for more. The 12-page Game Informer feature reveals a plethora of new details about Fall of Cybertron and how developer High Moon Studios took fan feedback and went "back the the drawing board" to develop what is described as a "natural successor."

What other characters would you like to see added to the game this time around?

Transformers: Fall of Cybertron will release on the PS3 and Xbox 360 in fall 2012.
