RocketWerks Studios revealed a documentary-style trailer for its upcoming sci-fi survival game Icarus, titled Icarus: No Rescue. Through the combination of in-game footage with live-action interviews, the video offers a unique and detailed backstory of the planet, including a mysterious disappearance.
From the creators of DayZ, the upcoming title is a session-based, Player vs. Environment (PvE) game in which players will explore the planet, Icarus, in time-limited drops. The game is currently being developed by RocketWerk founder and developer, Dean Hall. As of now, the game does not have an official release date but will be coming soon to the PC via the Steam Store.
Icarus was intended to be a second Earth. Plans to continue terraforming the planet to accommodate for human colonization were suddenly halted when explorers discovered an exotic and highly profitable new material. The planet was quickly deemed uninhabitable, prompting many prospects to question the true intentions behind the planet's failure.
The trailer reiterates that, in order to survive, players will need to gather materials, craft tools, build shelters, hunt for food, and remember to return within the time limit. If a player fails to return to the dropship in time, they will be lost forever. Players left behind lose their character progression and any tech they had.
The video also introduced the mysterious disappearance of one of the earlier prospects, Mo, who had been exploring farther from the camp. Due to an incoming storm, her team was forced to abandon her search and leave her behind. Some guessed she was attacked by bears, or caught in the storm. One claimed that she didn't want to return and purposefully chose to stay behind. However, the final scene of Mo watching the dropship take off does not seem to express the look of someone happy to have been left behind.
Icarus is expected to release in chapters, the first titled First Cohort. Here, players will explore the more Earth-like biomes of Icarus, with later chapters delving into the more alien terrains.
