As far as game marketing is concerned, it is really tough to top a fantastic trailer. Trailers have a variety of purposes: meant to tease a game that is still in development or sum up the experience players can expect from an upcoming title - either way, they can generate enough buzz to stimulate a hefty number of game pre-orders.

At this year’s E3, there were a wide variety of trailers, both cinematic and gameplay focused, which premiered to some serious fanfare. For the cinematic trailers, gamers expected a seamless blend of editing and soundtrack to create an experience indicative of the final product. There were a couple that fell flat, but the majority of those trailers seen during this year's event demonstrated a competent technique and an understanding of one's audience.

It was a tough decision, selecting our favorites, and there were a couple that ended up left off the list, but we think this Top 5 sums up the event quite nicely.

Without further ado, let's kick things off with our Top 5 cinematic trailers:

5. Halo 4

After news regarding Halo 4’s existence leaked right before the Microsoft press conference, gamers everywhere began eagerly anticipating Master Chief’s appearance at the event.

Though it was saved for last, the first tease of Spartan 117’s return did not disappoint. Featuring trademark Master Chief awesomeness and some elements prominently associated with the series, this was the perfect way for Halo 4 to make its presence known, and a great way to wrap up Microsoft’s event.

4. Saints Row: The Third

Saints: Row: The Third might still be preserving the humor that has featured prominently in the series, but that doesn’t mean THQ and Volition don't know how to make a slick trailer. Showcasing the new battle between the 3rd Street Saints and Morning Star, this trailer does feature a played out musical choice, but more than makes up for it in the action department.

Gamers might have written off the series amidst titles that strive for greater realism, but our first look at Saints Row: The Third proves the title might have a few things left to say for itself.

3. Killer Freaks from Outer Space

Though the E3 trailer market was over-saturated with sequels, prequels, and reboots, there were a couple new IPs in there that caught our eye. Principally among those seen during the expo was the Wii U proof of concept title Killer Freaks from Outer Space.

Combining humor and style with some crisp visuals, the Killer Freaks trailer showed off some of the game’s potential (albeit in CGI form) and was compelling from beginning to end. We didn't have Killer Freaks from Outer Space on our radar, but we certainly do now.

2. Hitman: Absolution

Despite early leaks of Agent 47’s return, gamers were still eagerly anticipating a first look at Hitman: Absolution. Showing off the assassin’s new up-close-and-personal approach, this trailer was well paced and subtle.

The only real downside to the trailer was the fact gamers were not treated to a final look at Agent 47, but were instead given glimpses of the unfortunate enemies caught in his wake. This might not be the Agent 47 gamers have come to know from previous entries, but his slick moves and well kept demeanor are still dripping with style.

1. Assassin's Creed Revelations

For our money, Assassin’s Creed Revelations is the most hypnotizing trailer to have come out of this year’s E3. Featuring a non-clichéd music (we’re looking at you Kanye West) in Woodkid's song "Iron" and boasting looks at both story and gameplay potential, this trailer encapsulates all the qualities that make a great cinematic trailer.

Ending on a cliffhanger — one which we very much would like the resolution to — and starring a much older and scruffier Ezio, this trailer stole the show during the Ubisoft press conference.
