Top 5 Characters That Should Be In Smash Bros. Brawl

Nov 25, 2009 by

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Recently, Nintendo confirmed via Gamespot that the original Super Smash Bros. would be releasing for the Wii’s virtual console in time for the holiday season. This has gotten the Game Rant team thinking about the fun we had with the newest game in the series and the 35 characters that we have enjoyed the company of in Brawl. But there was always something that we wanted more of from the Smash series, that being more characters!

There certainly wasn’t a lack of fighters in Brawl, but even Marvel vs. Capcom 2 had a roster of 56, and when compared to Brawl’s 35 it seems a little deflated. So,  being the creative minds that we are at Game Rant, I’ll be creating our list of top 5 characters we feel should have made the cut in Brawl, and no, the list will not include Master Chief, Spider-Man, Goku, or other characters who will never be in a Smash game.

Starting in reverse order:

5. Little Mac

Little Mac

Okay, so Little Mac was in Brawl but he was an assist trophy that looked like an updated old school Little Mac. He certainly wasn’t his cool cell shaded self! Little Mac would be a very cool character in Brawl, brought on by the fact that the only other cell-shaded character in the game is Toon Link.

Not only would he stand out from the rest of the roster, but the way his move set would be incorporated with his character would be pretty cool. Little Mac would utilize his fists as his main weapon, upper cuts, and flurries of punches would all be incorporated. Little Mac’s entrance on to the battlefield could even be him jogging after “Doc” Louise on his bike!

4. Mewtwo

Mewtwo

Mewtwo was a great addition to Melee, and back when Brawl was first announced, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the psychic power house. Alas, it was not meant to be as Nintendo felt the need to whore out his spot on the roster to advertise Pokemon Diamond/Pearl with Lucario.

Mewtwo was not only strong, but intelligent. He embodies the evil of man and represented a villain for the Pokemon series, and Smash Bros. certainly is lacking in the bad guy department. He is the last Pokemon you fight in Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/Leaf green/Fire red, and out of all the characters that were removed from Melee in the transition to Brawl (Pichu, Roy, Dr. Mario), Mewtwo seemed like the least likely character to get the axe, so it came as a surprise when he did.

3. King K.Rool

King K.Rool

The king of all Kremlings, King K.Rool is one mean crocodile-human hybrid thingy. King K.Rool has appeared in every Donkey Kong Country and is Donkey Kong’s archenemy. K.Rool would be a perfect fit for the world of Smash Bros. and he can be another heavy character with a fairly interesting set of moves.

King K.Rool is the meanest of the mean in the Donkey Kong series, always stealing Donkey Kong’s hard fought-for bananas and putting DK and his crew in barrels that can only be opened when whipped against a wall or the ground. The Donkey Kong series needs at least one more character representing them in Smash Bros., and K.Rool certainly fits the bill.

2. Ridley

Ridley

Although Ridley did appear in Brawl as a boss, it was a real shame that he wasn’t playable. The biggest argument against Ridley being a playable character in Smash Bros. is that he is too large, but they re-sized Pikachu and Kirby because they were too small, and Bowser certainly looks larger in Mario Galaxy then he appears in Brawl, so why the heck wouldn’t they be able to re-size Ridley?

Metroid only has one rep in Brawl and Ridley (being Samus Aran’s long time rival) seems like a perfect character to add to the game. Ridley is an interesting character in and of himself because he is not just some crazy randomly reoccurring dragon, he is actually the intelligent leader of a band of space pirates.

1. Geno

Geno

For those who never played Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars on the SNES, Geno is a puppet possessed by a celestial creature that was sent from star road to stop the Smithy Gang from taking over all of the Mushroom Kingdom. Geno possesses magical powers and can launch and then reattach his arms… pretty cool moveset potential there…

He has gained a cult following since his debut and was heavily rumored to appear in Brawl, but of course he didn’t or he wouldn’t be in this article. Geno would be a very interesting character addition, especially since ownership of the character is Square Enix’s, but he has only ever appeared in Nintendo games. Here is hoping we see more Geno in some form or another in not just the Smash series, but other games to come!

That is Game Rant’s Top 5 Characters that should have been in Brawl. Of course these are just our top 5 and not everybody will agree with them, and we wish we could have squeezed even more in. Overall, Smash Bros. Brawl is a great game, and if it had these characters it could have been even greater!

What do you think of our list? Who would be in your top 5?

  4. One can’t help but notice that almost everyone’s character choices are based on their own limited personal experiences. That is, whatever games (or characters) you happened to fall in love with – those are the things you want represented.

    …biased much?

This is very noticeable with…well, just about any somewhat-unknown character with a fanboy following, but it’s particularly noticeable with Super Mario RPG’s potential representative, Geno.

Being a HUGE fan of Geno and of Super Mario RPG (and, of course, the franchises which owe their creation to that game – Paper Mario, Mario & Luigi) I feel I hold a unique stance in saying that my fellow Geno fanboys need to calm down, back away from their keyboards, and shut their mouths for a few minutes.

    Seriously.

Now, before I get super-flamed (see what I did there?) for that comment, I want to explain myself. I love Geno. I love SMRPG. I, too, think he deserves at least a chance at a spot in some Smash game. Since the beginning of Brawl’s daily update period prior to its release, I was hoping, every single day, that the next update would reveal my buddy Geno getting ready to join the Brawl. Obviously, it did not happen, and I, like almost every other fan of Geno, was saddened by his absence.

But here’s how I try to be just a little bit more reasonable than the average fanboy: when I offer reasons why I think it would be fair for Geno to be in a Smash game, I base my reasoning on what Geno represents for both Super Mario RPG and for the entire Mario franchise – and NOT ON BIASED PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.

Don’t get me wrong. Some part of me wants Geno to be in a Smash game just because I love the character and because I played SMRPG non-stop as a kid. But when I have the “Which Characters Should / Shouldn’t Be in Smash” debate, I leave that bias out of my reasoning to the best of my ability. It’s annoying for everyone else in the conversation, and frankly, it probably wouldn’t get me anywhere if I were trying to convince a Smash developer to include Geno. How much I love a character has no bearing on how much that character deserves to fill a valuable and coveted spot in the beloved Smash series.

So, I will repeat my plea (perhaps a bit friendlier this time around): Geno fanboys (and for that matter, all fanboys): PLEASE leave your biases at the door and give…dare I say it…GOOD reasons for why characters should be in games. That’s all I ask…especially since it’s really not that difficult!

I’ll continue using Geno as an example. What game sparked two VERY successful franchises which CONTINUE TO LIVE ON TODAY? Oh, that was Super Mario RPG. Considering the fact that the game was released less than half a year before its console became obsolete (SMRPG is for SNES; N64 was released four months after SMRPG was) Super Mario RPG garnered a rather sizeable fan following. It’s no surprise that the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series went on to become so successful; both borrowed very many elements from their predecessor, Super Mario RPG. Without such an excellent yet humble blueprint, the Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi series might not have been as good as they are – indeed, they might not have come into existence at all. So, it’s fair to say that Super Mario RPG deserves some respect – if not a lot of love. And who better to represent Super Mario RPG than the fandom’s favorite character from that game, the one-and-only Geno?

Oh, and here’s an interesting side note…remember that poll Sakurai did to see which characters people wanted in Brawl? If you don’t, that’s all right. I’m pretty sure it was exclusive to Japan, especially since no copies of the full list seem to have survived… (here’s what appears to be the top part of the list: http://redcardgroup.com/granite/?p=2506)

I noticed something about that list which, to my mind, makes perfect sense. Guess who was TIED for the second most requested character? Yeah. That’s right. Geno. You know, that wooden doll whose arsenal consists of nothing but ranged attacks (which would UNDENIABLY be interesting for Smash) and whose ONLY major appearance was…how many YEARS ago? Yeah. He was tied for number TWO on the list. That means he tied beat Diddy Kong, a Nintendo fan favorite, for popularity.

Now here’s the thing. Geno’s owned by Square Enix. I don’t know what their deal is, but for all we know, Sakurai could have BEGGED them to let him use Geno, and they could have kicked him out the door. Additionally, for all we know, he never asked. Either way, Square’s owniership of Geno must be taken into account.

Now, obviously, I’ve been very pro-Geno in this rant. But rationally, I can understand why Geno did NOT make it into Brawl and why he might not make it into any future titles. I’m absolutely alright with that because my opinion is, after all, only my opinion.

So, in conclusion, I make this request to everyone: go beyond your own biased personal love for characters, will you? (I’m looking at you, blatantly unrealistic FFVII lovers…) Of course it’s fun to just go on a forum, post your fantasies (however unrealistic – I’m STILL looking at you, FFVII lovers!) and dream, but I think it’s fair to say that opinions are far more interesting and thought-provoking when they’re backed-up by facts and relevant (I stress this, RELEVANT) details.

By all means, respect other’s opinions, but perhaps more importantly, give everyone else a darn good reason to respect yours.

  5. I see it says tied beat in my last comment…I meant tied.

Also, please excuse the rather lengthy rant. This IS gamerant, after all.

  6. Top 5?
5 – Elza (The Last Story)
    4 – Little Mac
    3 – Isaac (Golden Sun)
    2 – Isa (Sin & Punishment 2)
    1 – Travis Touchdown

NO: DBZ, Naruto, Nintendo Bosses (Ridley, KK Rool), any 3rd party characters that haven’t featured in a nintendo game (which IDIOT wants Sly Cooper??)
Bring back Roy, axe Toon Link, R.O.B & Wolf, change Falco, Ganon and Lucas moveset not to be clones of Fox, C. Falcon & Ness. Change Pkmn Trainer to have customisable appearance and starter pokemon from any generation, I would say change Lucario for Zoroark for the change of gen. 2 Final smashes each character (1 cinematic, 1 non), each character have individual stages, alternate costumes, story and boss. Classic, story, time attack and all star modes. Flawless online, create your own character or upload characters from nintendo exclusive franchises (max 10 but can delete and change characters). Keep all stadium modes, add new type of melee (1000 man melee for example). Voice chat capability. EVERY non-playable pokemon in pokeballs. Retain all assist trophies except Mac & Isaac (playable), add Kamek, Wolf Link, Henry Cooldown & Bullet Bill. All Super Smash Brothers sequels have been synonyms of the word “fight” so SSB Clash, conflict, rivalry, spar, duel or affray, hopefully clash. Think of it; SSBC, awesome.

    • SSB4 has been confirmed on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS for 2012-13. Think of the possibilities!

  7. No one has mentioned the Masked Man from Mother 3?

  8. I love those choices, all I really even want is King K.Rool hahahaha

  9. I think Little Mac and Isaac are the most likely to appear, as they made significant appearances as Assist Trophies in Brawl. In Melee, Charizard was a Pokéball Pokémon and Pit was a Trophy, and they ended up being playable characters in the next game. So, I think it’s reasonable to assume that something similar could happen.

Based on that explanation, maybe Shadow The Hedgehog could also make the transition from Assist Trophy to playable character, or at least appear as a separate skin for Sonic like Dark Link did in Brawl.

The character I want most of all, though, is Mewtwo. I loved playing as him in Melee and I was really disappointed that he didn’t reappear, although I do quite like Lucario as well.

  10. i dont like little mac or isaac
they sould put characters based on votes, and little mac and isaac are god assit trophies

  11. .Birdo
    .Roy
    .Mewtwo
    .Louie
    .
    .Tails
    .Knuckles

There should also be unlock able Character skins (Like Wario, how there Biker form and Classic form) For Example:

.Toon Link, Young link, & Classic Link
.Mario & Dr. Mario, & All Stars costume Mario
.Skyward Sword Link, Twilight Princess Link & Ocarina of Time Link,
.Classic Sonic, Regular Sonic, & Shadow
.Toon Gannondorf & Twilight Princess Gannondorf
    .Pikachu & Pichu
    .FR&LG Pokemon Trainer, & HG&SS Pokemon Tainer

  12. I just Read part of the Article and they mentioned the Alternate Costumes idea 0_0 hahahaha Nintendo, Please do it! It’ll be Awesome!

  13. Also With the Skin Idea, Each character only has 4 basic Skins (Red, Blue, Green, and Regular Color (Unless if the regular color is R, B, or G, then an aditional color) But you earn more Colors by either playing the character a certain amount of rounds, or by beating Classic Mode or something.

    Ex: Mario
    Red (Basic)
    Blue
    Green
    Yellow

Unlock Brown by: Play 10 Rounds as Mario
Unlock White by: Clear Classic Mode as Mario

  14. 1. Shadow The Hedgehog
    2. Tails
    3. Knuckles The Echidna
    4. Amy Rose
    5. Blaze The Cat
    6. The New Emo from Zelda Skyward Sword
    7. Skull Kid from Majora’s Mask
    8. Waluigi
    9. Birdo
    10. Baby Bowser
    11. Daisy
    12. wolf Link
    13. Captain Goro
    14. Krystal Fox

    Also agree with unlocking clothes

  15. My Top 5 requests for SSB4
    With Reasons For each

    #5- Skins!
I would LOVE to see skins. Alot of characters could be incorporated into the game without taking up slots, like gamerant suggested. You could even have to unlock them through challenges, adding a whole new thing to do in SSB! For example, there could be a challenge for Sonic to use chaos control (a much better double jump-like technique for him in my opinion) 6 times in 6 seconds to unlock a Shadow skin for him. Another thing they could add with skins are different effects to the move. For example, Shadow and Sonic generally fight the same, just with different styles. Sonic favors speed where he favors energy. So, replace some attacks when using the Shadow skin with energy attack, like Chaos spear, yet it be the same attack sonic would do. Just with a different effect. That would be really cool

    #4- More Sonic characters
Ok, you’ve probably realized I’m a sonic fan by now. But hear me out- a lot of the fanbase went CRAZY when they found SOnic was in the game. Now people want more- Shadow, Tails, Knuckles, and others. We don’t need alot, I’d be happy if they just added Shadow. But the others would be appreciated.

#3- My idea for story mode
Imagine a story mode where you don’t play as the normal Super Smash Characters- you play as a character YOU create and YOU give them a moveset. Of course it’d be simple, just pick a move for each command the play can select for a character normally from the preset characters already in the game. Same for the look of the charcter, select body parts of the characters you like and recolour them to your hearts desire, give it a name, an icon (For example, Yoshi’s is the Egg. Mario’s is the Mushroom. etc) and poof! This would add SOOOOO much more diversity to multiplayer.

#2- More diverse custom stage editing.

I would love to see improvements to the custom stage builder to add a lot cooler things. I’m kind of tired as it’s 11:00 PM where im at so im going to cut to the chase now.

    #1- 3D

Could you imagine? Brawl levels in 3d?!?! Left, right, forward, backward, this would make the game SOOOOO much better! Sure, they probably wont do this, most want to keep the feel of the old game. But I just think these features would be AWESOME. If you agree please tell me :3

  16. OMG! I can’t. Wait for SSB4!

I think I’d bring back Roy but redesigned and different moveset from Marth.
    I would add
    1. Shadow the hedgehog (NOT as Sonics clone or as a skin also with a different style of moves and come on Sonic needs a sick rival and there’s no one better than Shadow and his badass moves)
    2. Princess Daisy (They’ve got to quit making her an alternate skin for Princess Peach! I mean for one we need more female characters and she’s nothing like Peach, Daisy is tougher, louder, more agressive but just as awsome. Not to mention she’s shorter than Peach and had a totally different head and eye shape.)
    3. Krystal (From Star Fox. Personally I was disappointed when the only upgrade for female characters was a Zero-Suit-Samus -Even though she’s effin kick ass- but Krystal is really an awsome consideration)
    4. Toad & Toadette -as a duo like the ice-climbers- (I agree with the Ice climbers needing competition XP)
    5. Rose/Rosalina -from Mario Galaxy- (We need more girls! Enough said. Plus she’d have a very different style from the other cuz she lives in outer space & she considerably taller than Peach and Daisy)
As for Ridley he would be a badass character but he is to big so I agree with the assist trophy Ridley.
Snake is a creep he’s got to go along with King DDD. I totally 100% agree with the outfit ideas.
I agree with not bringing Pichu or Young Link Back. Oh! I just remembered. I hate Toon Link with a pasiion he’s too damn creepy!!! He’s always frowning he’s for sure got to go. And Falco’s attacks should be more adapted to his style. Oh and for sure no more Pokemon. I hate the idea of the Miis and the animal crossing characters. Has anyone ever noticed how innocent they look and are? I mean hello! Anymore clones would be a waste of space. No more Links. Ganondorf needs his sword. Captain Falcon is a loner! Shiek is still blonde while Zelda in Brunette wtf?
I think each character should have an essential role in story mode. Not like the ice climbers who jumped around like idiots in Subspace Emissary. Yea more assist trophies? Like Cosmo,Knuckels, and Amy from Sonic. Or Koopas from Mario.
Idk but yea Shadow, Daisy, Krystal, Toad & Toadette, & Rose but mainly the first three!!!

  17. 5. Little Mac
    4. Skull Kid (preferebly MM but twilight would be good enough)
    3. Glitch (For a third party character)
    2. Insert name here. from madworld
    1. Black Knight fire emblem
I might change this later but thats my top 5
    1.

  18. 1-goron link maybe a transformation of link kind of like zelda
2-goku/dbz chars would help nimtendo rake in tons of cash as they are known and loved by people across the world
    3-shadow
4-viewtiful joe would totally work and as a final smash he could jump into six six the giant robot and fight as him until time runs out
5-wolverine would be sweet and could totally work and would also help them rake in lots of cash
    5-

  19. Characters i think are likely:
    Little Mac
    Balloon Fighter
    Skull kid
    Ghirahim
    Waluigi
    Bowser Jr
    Zoroark
    Meowth
    Knuckle Joe
Metroid Prime ( as Dark Samus)
    Samaurai Goroh
    Magnus (Uprising)
    Masked Man
    Krystal
    Isaac
    K. Rool
    Soren
    Mega Man
    Nightmare (Soul Calibur)
    Shadow

People likely to get the axe are Lucario, Toon Link, and PokeTrainer
I also think Mewtwo is likely to be brought back.

  20. 1.Waluigi, Nuff’ said
