In preparation for next week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, Square Enix has just released a new, and unfortunately fully CGI, trailer for their upcoming reboot of the Tomb Raider franchise. Featuring a younger and much more stripped down version of Croft, this trailer takes the world adventurer to some new places while still feeling somewhat familiar.

Set, for the most part, on the same boat that was rumored to be tied with the title, the trailer features only one other character besides Lara, and is full of both characterization and action set pieces.

And, to top it all off, the trailer culminates in a reveal of the bloodied, woman-on-a-mission that has been showcased in a few of the game’s promotional materials. This is Tomb Raider, but it definitely isn’t the same Tomb Raider from back during the PS1 generation.

Though the trailer is devoid of any real gameplay it does do a great job of showcasing the differences between the Lara Croft gamers had grown up with and this new grittier version. It isn’t so much that Lara Croft isn’t recognizable in this trailer, but with a “reboot” comes the assumption that previous familiarities with the character will be tossed aside.

This is the Lara Croft that doesn’t wield two pistols (although we sure hope at some point she does), but instead works with whatever materials she can find. As one of the game franchises to inspire titles like Uncharted, it seems only fitting that Lara Croft one up Nathan Drake in more than a few areas.

While we hope to find out more about this new Tomb Raider during next week’s E3, with the game set to release late next year, it’s hard to imagine much of the title is ready to show. However, if this trailer is any indication, it looks like Lara Croft is back and she’s even more awesome than ever.

What do you think of this new trailer for Tomb Raider? What do you think of this younger, grittier version of Lara Croft?

Tomb Raider is scheduled to release in Fall of 2012 on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.
