While we have already seen quite a bit of Lara Croft in action in Square Enix's new reboot of Tomb Raider, the publisher has just today announced who would be voicing the iconic adventurer. Thus far, we've only heard Croft's voice in fits and spurts but now gamers are going to become better acquainted with the actress voicing her.

That individual in question is Camilla Luddington, a British-born actress who has made the rounds on premium cable TV. Luddington just wrapped up a short stint on Showtime's Californication, and can soon be seen on HBO's True Blood playing the character of Claudette.

Crystal Dynamics went through a rigorous talent search in both the US and Europe, searching for an actress whose voice truly embodies that of Lara Croft. According to Square Enix, Luddington embodied both the "depth of emotion and the youthful tone needed for Lara Croft."

Along with unveiling Luddington as the voice of Croft, Crystal Dynamics have announced that she will be joining them for the Nerd HQ and Tomb Raider Comic-Con panels in order to discuss her role and the inception of this new grittier Lara Croft. From the trailers it's plain to see that unlike the Angeline Jolie films or even the earlier versions of Croft, this iteration is stripped down and fighting to survive.

Darrell Gallagher, head of Crystal Dynamics, knows the importance of casting Lara Croft's voice, much like the voice of fellow adventurer Nathan Drake, is everything. Crystal Dynamics needed to get this casting right, and apparently they feel they have nailed it.

Some might argue that the excessive grunting and groaning from Croft in the recent footage for the game has over sexualized the character of Lara Croft, but that's only a byproduct of the action adventure genre. Hopefully, Luddington's portrayal can help instill a little more humanity and a little less helplessness.

How do you feel about a relatively unknown voice actor being tasked to play Lara Croft? Aside from the accent what important qualities should the character exude?
