‘Tomb Raider Collection’ Confirmed for PS3

It has been almost a year since Crystal Dynamics laid off a large chunk of employees in order to better focus their efforts on the Tomb Raider series. Since then, they have released Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light and are hard at work on a reboot of the series simply titled Tomb Raider. In preparation for this reboot, Crystal Dynamics has confirmed their plan to release a Tomb Raider Collection for PS3.

The collection will include Ms. Croft’s three most recent games bearing the Tomb Raider moniker – Tomb Raider: Legend, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, and Tomb Raider: Underworld, along with PlayStation Home avatars and a XMB theme.

Each of these titles have been met with varying degrees of success, but nothing that has reached as high a level of acclaim as the first few Tomb Raider games developed by Core Design.

Tomb Raider Underworld Lara Slide

Tomb Raider: Legend was the first Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider game and a breath of fresh air after some truly awful entries in the franchise. Legend didn’t get everything right, but definitely reworked the formula and was a step in the right direction.

Tomb Raider: Anniversary was a surprising follow-up to Legend which sought to cash in on gamer’s nostalgia for the good ‘ol days of Tomb Raider. Instead of a direct sequel, Anniversary took the new mechanics and style of Legend and applied them to the original Tomb Raider game in what is an effective and charming remake.

Tomb Raider: Underworld was the first Tomb Raider game to be released for the PS3 and picks up directly where Legend left off. Most people saw this as another good step for Crystal Dynamics, but some felt the camera system ruined the experience. In addition, the PS2 and Wii versions of the game received considerably worse reviews than their Xbox 360 and PS3 counterparts.

Overall, these are three fun games that are well worth a try, especially for fans of Lara Croft. The Tomb Raider PS3 Collection is easily the most convenient and complete way to experience Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider games.

Are you going to pick up the Tomb Raider Collection for PS3? What other classic series are you interested in seeing given the “collection” treatment?

The Tomb Raider Collection will be released for PS3 sometime in early 2011. As well as this upcoming collection, be on the lookout for Crystal Dynamic’s Tomb Raider reboot. Game Rant will stay updated with all of the latest information and news.

  1. I was totally excited about a Tomb Raider Collection until I found out it was Legend, Anniversary and Underworld rather than the originals. :|

  2. I already have these 3 in some other form. Like what Rory said if it was hd remakes of first 3 I would buy on day one. This is disappointing.

  3. Played Legend/Anniversary on PC. The need to rebuy them on PS3 isn’t there sadly. Now if they remake Tomb Raider 2/3 we could talk again about rebuying old games.

  4. The tone is pretty much “meh.” Also while an HD remake of the originals would be cool, looking back, the control was pretty bad. Best of that era, but after playing modern games of the same type I can’t go back to that.

  5. I haven’t played Tomb Raider II in ages, but I had a ton of fun with it way back when. Is it one of those games that is better left as a fond memory?

    • What they should do is just up rez the graphics from Tomb 1-3 and port them into the engine of Underworld and Legend. The exploration and story of the old games with the updated controls of the new games would have been amazing. But my suggestion would cost money, and this collection is just an embarassing attempt to cash in by releasing games that they don’t need to spend money on to update. Why would you include Underworld is some sort of collection? What it is like less than 2 years old? If anyone is a big enough Tomb Raider fan to be interested in this collection wouldn’t they probably own one of these games already.
