Adult Swim releases a new trailer for the upcoming Sega Genesis reboot, ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove, that's sure to spark nostalgic excitement in gamers.

Sometimes, games from the past maintain their hold on gamers’ hearts. It may be the game’s compelling story, interesting characters, or unique gameplay, but whatever the cause, players can’t help but reminisce. ToeJam and Earl is one of those games. The early ‘90s Sega game was highly praised by both critics and players for its originality, humor, and funky soundtrack.

Last year, gamers confirmed their love for the classic title when they successfully Kickstarted a hip reboot of ToeJam and Earl. This week, Adult Swim kept hype alive for the game by releasing a short teaser trailer for the upcoming game, ToeJam and Earl: Back in the Groove.

With the game development community focusing so much on new, groundbreaking games, it seems like the perfect time for a nostalgic trip back to before the turn of the millennium. Despite the plethora of new games on the horizon, many gamers still look forward to new additions to Xbox One’s backward compatibility and remastered versions of past hits like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Skyrim.

There’s something to be said about the simplicity of games like ToeJam and Earl - and this game, in particular, has the ability to provide a special experience for players. The two funky aliens, ToeJam and Earl, perfectly capture the goofy coolness of the ‘90s with their bright clothes, backward hat, and gold chains.

While the original ToeJam and Earl game was played in all its 16-bit glory, Back in the Groove will adopt a more matured graphical standard. However, players may also have an opportunity to play the new title in an old-school skin that returns the crazy duo back to their Sega Genesis likeness. Players can still expect to see the franchise’s trademark wacky Earthlings and zany color scheme, with environments built in impressive 3D. There are also a handful of new features to look forward to, such as procedurally generated islands, zooming capabilities, and much more.

One of the most endearing aspects of the ToeJam and Earl series is its fun-natured cooperative gameplay. Players will once again have an opportunity to drop down next to each other on the couch and explore the zany world of two kooky, yet charming characters, which should be particularly welcome given the lack of modern split-screen co-op titles.

What do you think about the new ToeJam and Earl game? Will it live up to the hype?
