Yesterday marked the premiere of the first official trailer for Marvel Studios' Thor, comic book gamers have been waiting patiently for the 2010 Spike Video Game Awards for a chance to see the Thor tie-in video game from Sega.

As all gamers know, movies based on video games usually aren't good, as is the case for films based on video games. Sega didn't bring fans what they desired with Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk or Iron Man 2, the latter of which Marvel promised would be of "high quality." Can Thor be the turning point and open the door for good Captain America and The Avengers games?

At New York Comic-Con a few months back, I walked the floor before the doors opened to the public and chatted with Thor's game producer Matt Powers who showed us the teaser, some concept art and discussed the setting of the game. The point Sega wished to emphasize in showing off Thor and Captain America is that the games are not the same of the movies, they tell different stories based in that same world.

In the case of Thor, it's vastly different than the film in that it takes place entirely in Asgard where Thor must spend is time battling a series of boss-like creatures, all of which are a lot bigger than him.

What do you think of the gameplay?

Thor releases May 3 2011 and the Thor movie hits theaters May 6, 2011. Check out all of the new trailers and more from the 2010 Spike Video Game Awards and follow us on Twitter @GameRant.
